San Francisco Drops Overtime Decision at Santa Clara in Regular-Season Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (16-13, 9-9) dropped its final regular-season game of the season at Santa Clara (23-8, 13-5), falling 90-82 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Leavey Center.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-17.
  • Santa Clara kept adding to its lead at the start of the second quarter, building a 25-21 advantage at the 8:57 mark. San Francisco answered with eight straight points, capped off with an Aina Cargol jumper to give the green and gold a 29-25 lead at 5:39.
  • The Dons later scored six of the final seven points of the first half and held a 39-32 edge over the Broncos at the halftime break.
  • San Francisco continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to double-digits, 49-39, before going on an 8-2 scoring run to push the lead to 58-41 with 1:41 to go in the third quarter.
  • Despite the massive deficit, Santa Clara trimmed its deficit to 14, 58-44, following three straight points to end the period.
  • The Dons surrendered their advantage as the Broncos forced overtime by tying the game at 76-76 at the end of the fourth. The Broncos secured the victory in the overtime period, outscoring the Dons 14-6. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Four players scored in double figures for the Dons, with Candy Edokpaigbe leading the way with 23 points.
  • The bench made an impact throughout the contest, scoring 25 points, led by Michelle Ugwah's season-high 13 points on 66.7 percent (six-for-nine) shooting in 22 minutes off the bench. Meghan McIntyre recorded a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds to help lead the second unit.
  • Mara Neira also added 13 points, while Nataša Taušová added 10 and eight rebounds.
  • As a team, San Francisco secured 54 rebounds, the most by the program in a game this season.

Following the final game of the regular season, San Francisco awaits its seeding in the upcoming West Coast Conference Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., at Orleans Arena.
