SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – USF Associate Head Baseball Coach Greg Moore has been named to
Baseball America's Top-10 College Assistant Coaches list for the 2013 season. The list was compiled from votes cast by current Division I head coaches and the observations of more than a dozen scouts around the country.
Moore, entering his tenth season as a member of the Don's coaching staff, led the 2012 pitching staff to a 3.25 ERA and a gaudy 461-to-164 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He coached four Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week award winners and one WCC Pitcher of the Month selection.
Three of Moore's pitchers were selected in the 2012 Major League Baseball amateur draft, including
Kyle Zimmer with the No. 5 overall pick (Kansas City Royals),
Elliott Waterman in the 13th round (Washington Nationals), and lefty
Jordan Remer in the 21st round (Cincinnati Reds). The three drafted players had a combined 3.23 GPA.
In addition, Moore's pitchers earned four spots on the WCC All-Academic team. Moore also helped guide a record-setting academic performance for the team this season as the Diamond Dons set a program record with a 3.24 Fall GPA. 24 of 35 players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the Fall, while 23 of 35 players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the Spring.
Here's what Baseball America had to say:
The Skinny: Moore excels at turning raw, unheralded arms into marquee prospects; he has coached three first-round picks in the last five years at a USF program with modest resources.
What They're Saying: "He's diligent in his work, he's consistent with his players, and the players that he coaches always get better. He's not an ego guy; he's not afraid to listen. I think, eventually, when he becomes a leader of his own program, I think he'll be good. I look at him like a Tim Corbin type of guy: He's smart, he knows how to deal with people, but he's relentless. He doesn't clone guys, he lets them pitch to their strengths."
