SAN FRANCISCO – USF baseball defeated San Francisco State Wednesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond, giving the Dons their first win of the season after losing three straight to Cal Poly over the weekend.
The Dons scored 10 times in the game, putting a pair of two-run innings on the board in the second and sixth and two three-run frames in the fifth and seventh.
Outfielders
Derek Atkinson (3-4, run, RBI) and
Mitchell Rowan (2-3, run, 3 RBI) and designated hitter Zachary Turner (2-5, 3 RBI) led the USF attack that collected 17 hits including a pair of doubles.
Freshman catcher
Ryan Matranga erased a 1-0 SFSU lead with an RBI single in the second that scored a pair. The Gators scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead and the teams were tied after five-and-a-half innings, 5-5.
The Dons held SFSU scoreless for the remainder of the game, with
Andrew Pulido,
Jesse DeLong and
Adam Cimber each tossing a shutout inning to close out the game.
“It's a game hopefully we can win,” said USF Head Coach
Nino Giarratano. “It's always great to play them, Coach Cummins does such a great job. It was a great opportunity for us to swing the bats and play a game on a Wednesday afternoon after some rain and get ready for the weekend.”
The Dons travel to Santa Barbara this weekend where they will play four games with the Gauchos, including a doubleheader Saturday.
