SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of San Francisco Diamond Dons (8-11, 1-2 WCC) wrapped up their series at Gonzaga (11-6-1, 2-1 WCC) in style, never trailing in a 9-3 victory that salvaged the series after they lost the first two games.
Sophomore
Bradley Zimmer had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI and a pair of home runs. Zimmer homered to center in the fourth and down the left field line in the eighth, the first multi-home run game of his Dons career. He extended his hit streak to 11 games on the season, and went 9-for-19 for the week, scoring seven runs and driving in five.
USF received a solid outing from starting pitcher
Christian Cecilio. The sophomore went 5.1 innings of one-run baseball and has pitched 15 innings in his last three starts, allowing just two runs. Cecilio left the game leading, 2-1, in the sixth inning and
Adam Cimber,
Bob Mott and
Andrew Pulido kept the Dons ahead with Cimber escaping a jam in the sixth, getting keeping the Bulldogs from scoring after inheriting a runner in scoring position with one out.
The Dons scored a pair of runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and four more in the nine, when they sent nine men to the plate. Second baseman
Jason Mahood collected his second multi-hit game in a row going 2-for-5 with two RBI, and third baseman
Bob Cruikshank was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
“Today was a good bounce-back win for the Dons,” said USF Head Coach
Nino Giarratano. “We pitched well all day. Cecilio gave us a great start and the relievers were great out of the bullpen.
Bradley Zimmer had a productive day, and our offense was very good late in the game.
Josh Miller and
Jason Mahood had big hits, and it's been a long road trip for the team. We were able to stay close to .500, and that should lead to a lot of good things for us.”
The Dons have a day off Monday before hosting Nevada Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Benedetti Diamond. The matchup with the Wolfpack will be USF's first home game since February 20.
