SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco Diamond Dons (9-11) played well Tuesday, defeating Nevada (13-8) 7-1 at Benedetti Diamond in a game that the Dons never trailed in.

Senior Jason Mahood continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a steal of home plate on a double-steal in the seventh inning. Mahood is 7-for-13 with six runs and five RBI in his last three games.

Stellar pitching from the Dons kept the Wolf Pack from mounting many threats offensively. In a game that saw USF use seven pitchers, none of them allowed more than one hit. The Dons did not issue a walk on the day and struck out eight.

Third baseman Bob Cruikshank was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Derek Atkinson, Bradley Zimmer and Mitchell Rowan also drove in runs for the Dons.

Freshman Peter Dempsey collected the first hit of his collegiate career, lining a single up the middle in the fourth inning.

The Dons took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second and relinquished it only briefly in the top of the third before scoring two runs in each of  the third, fifth and seventh innings to put the game away.

“I thought we pitched really well today,” said USF Head Coach Nino Giarratano. “We used seven pitchers and I thought we were really effective; guys threw strikes out of the bullpen and we got a lot of guys work. We played pretty good defense late in the game, and anytime we can put up 10 hits in a game that's solid. The double steal was a big play for us and we got two sacrifice flies. If we can get everybody going offensively we can really score some runs, but I'll take seven.”

The Dons return to the field Friday, when they host the Portland Pilots at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
