SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco Diamond Dons (10-11) moved within a game of .500 for the season Friday, defeating Portland (7-14) in a pitchers duel at Benedetti Diamond, 2-1.
Dons starter
Abe Bobb had his best outing of the season, going 7.2 innings of scoreless ball. Bobb was able to pitch out of trouble early on, emerging unscathed in the first after putting runners at second and third with no outs, and was dominant from there on. The redshirt junior retired 12 in a row and 17-of-18 in his first win of the season.
Portland starter Travis Radke matched Bobb's effort, going 6 innings and allowing just one run in a tough-luck loss.
Freshman catcher
Kyle Anderson's double started the first Dons rally, his first hit in a Dons uniform. Anderson scored on a
Jason Mahood fielder's groundout in the fifth to give the Dons a 1-0 lead.
USF pushed another run across in the seventh on Mahood's second RBI of the game, a two-out single into right field that scored centerfielder
Justin Maffei.
Maffei was 4-for-4 on the day with a stolen base, and with Mahood, produced six hits at the top of the Dons lineup.
Adam Cimber closed out the game for his fourth save of the season, allowing one run in the ninth to preserve the win.
“I thought Abe was good in his last three starts,” said USF Head Coach
Nino Giarratano. “Today was another good start for him, and I was glad to see him get a win. I was glad to see us get the two runs we needed today, and
Kyle Anderson had a big hit for us today. It's a good win, and we're excited to play in the Dante Benedetti Classic tomorrow.“
The series continues tomorrow at AT&T Park for the Eighth Annual Dante Benedetti Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with $10 tickets available at the AT&T park gate.
