FORT WORTH, Texas – A day after pulling to .500 on the season yesterday, the University of San Francisco Diamond Dons broke through the barrier for the first time, beating Texas Christian, 4-3, at Lupton Stadium Sunday. USF moved to 16-15 on the season, while TCU fell to 14-18. USF has now won three series in a row.
The Dons pitching was solid again, as starter
Christian Cecilio went 4.1 innings, allowing one unearned run. USF extended its winning streak to nine consecutive starts by Cecilio, who hasn't allowed more than one run in six of his last seven games.
Zachary Turner gave the Dons a 2-1 lead in the fifth when he drove home a pair on a double. The junior has driven in runs in three of his last five games.
TCU took a late lead on a two-run, two-error play in the bottom of the seventh, when pitcher
Adam Cimber threw a potential double play ball into centerfield.
Justin Maffei came up with the throw in center, and his attempt to cut down the runner got away from catcher
Ryan Matranga, allowing the trail runner to score TCU's third run.
Trailing 3-2 after eight, USF rallied for a pair in the ninth an RBI single by
Bradley Zimmer. Senior
Jason Mahood took third on the play, and stole home for the second time this season when Zimmer was involved in a lengthy run down.
Maffei (1-for-5, 2 runs) and
Jason Mahood (2-for-4, 2 runs) scored all the Dons runs Sunday.
Bob Mott (1-1) earned the win for the Dons after throwing 1.2 innings of one-hit ball.
The Dons will head back west and head to Nevada Tuesday to take on the Wolf Pack at Peccole Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
