SAN FRANCISCO—After a challenging preseason slate that included eight road matches, the Dons begin West Coast Conference play this week by making trips to Loyola Marymount and No. 11 Pepperdine.

San Francisco will open the weekend at Loyola Marymount on Friday at 7 p.m. and will then make the drive up to Malibu to take on No. 11 Pepperdine on Sunday at 1 p.m.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAY BEGINS
In the opening weekend, San Francisco will be on the road for Loyola Marymount and No. 11 Pepperdine and will play its first home conference match against Santa Clara. The Dons were picked to finish sixth in the conference by the WCC coaches and begin against two teams they fared well against last year. USF faced the two in the same weekend at Negoesco Stadium and beat Pepperdine 2-0 and tied LMU 1-1. Mackenzie Krieser and Alex Alugas scored the two goals against the Waves.

OVER THE WEEKEND
San Francisco played its lone match of the weekend at Cal Poly and had some chances early to get on the board, one of which was a shot by Alex Alugas that went off the crossbar, but was unable to capitalize and fell 3-1. The Dons put eight shots on goal in the match.

ROAD WARRIORS
The Dons continue their trek away from Negoesco Stadium when they take on Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine this weekend. The weekend will wrap up a five-game road trip and, dating back to Sept. 5, the Dons will have played eight of the last nine matches away from home. With road trips that include Boston, Colorado and Reno, the Dons have traveled nearly 10,000 miles during their preseason schedule.

TORRES' RETURN
Junior defender Leticia Torres left the team following its match at Harvard on Sept. 5 to join the Chilean National Team as they competed in Brazil in the CONMEBOL two-round FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Despite wins over Argentina and Bolivia, Chile was unable to get out of group play and into the final round. She missed five matches and the Dons went 2-2-1 in her absence.

SIGNATURE WIN AT BOSTON
The Dons picked up what might be their most impressive win under Jim Millinder when they traveled to Massachusetts and beat Boston University 1-0 on Sept. 7. After a Jessica Nakae goal in the ninth minute of action, USF held the Terriers to five total shots with only two being on goal. Boston is the defending Patriot League champion.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GOALIE
Madalyn Schiffel, who was named to the All-WCC honorable mention team last season, participated in the Team USA U-20 camp in April with some of the best college players in the country. She recorded six shutouts last season and had 10 other matches where she only allowed one goal.

RETURNING ALL-LEAGUE PLAYERS
The Dons have five returning players who have earned All-WCC honors and among those are three who earned honors last season. Madalyn Schiffel and Halle Bissin earned honorable mention honors and Jessica Nakae was selected to the All-Freshman Team. Jaciara Mello (2011 All-Freshman Team) and Mackenzie Krieser (2012 All-WCC Second Team) also return for the Dons.

ABOUT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
The Lions have won five of their last six matches including wins on the road at UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. Shannon Kent leads LMU with four goals this season and has scored three of them in the last three matches. LMU has also been very good on defense, having allowed nine goals through 10 matches including four shutouts. Goalkeeper Sophia Leksan has an .804 save percentage.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE
The Waves have been one of the best teams in the nation this season. They won their first four matches of the season and it included an upset win over No. 9 North Carolina. Pepperdine has scored at least two goals six times this season and has been led by Lynn Williams, who has seven goals and three assists. Pepperdine has outscored their opponents 18-6 and have recorded seven shutouts.
