SAN FRANCISCO—After getting back into the win column against rival Saint Mary's, the Dons are looking to keep the momentum going as they are back on the road this week to take on San Diego and first place BYU.
Â
This will be the first weekend in which the Dons will play two matches since Oct. 3-5 (Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine) and going into Thursday's match at San Diego, USF will have played two matches over the last 17 days.
Â
SCHIFFEL ON VERGE OF HISTORYMadalyn Schiffel picked up her 14th career solo shutout on Sunday and is now one short of breaking the school record, which was set by Amy Voiland (1994-98). Schiffel has twice participated with Team USA camps.
Â
LAST TIME OUTThe Dons got goals from
Mackenzie Krieser and
Jessica Nakae as they were able to shutout Saint Mary's 2-0 on Sunday. It was the third goal of the season for each of them. It was also the team's sixth shutout of the season and 14th solo shutout in
Madalyn Schiffel's career. That tied Schiffel with Amy Voiland (1994-98) for the most solo shutouts in school history.
Â
DEFENSE CONTINUES SOLID PLAY
San Francisco has allowed three goals through their first four conference games, which is tied for third in the WCC. The back line of
Abigail Phillips,
Ali Schaffer,
Leticia Torres,
Allison Arriola and
Madalyn Schiffel has been a key to that success. The Dons are fourth in the conference with six shutouts and Schiffel has played the third most minutes in goal (1388:08) in the WCC.
Â
MOVING ON UPSan Francisco is one win short of picking its seventh victory of the season, which would be the most wins since 2004 when the Dons won 10 matches. The Dons sit in a three-way tie for fifth place with San Diego and Portland and are only six points out of first place. USF has five WCC games remaining and the final three will be played at Negoesco Stadium.
Â
TORRES' RETURNJunior defender
Leticia Torres left the team following its match at Harvard on Sept. 5 to join the Chilean National Team as they competed in Brazil in the CONMEBOL two-round FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Despite wins over Argentina and Bolivia, Chile was unable to get out of group play and into the final round. She missed five matches and the Dons went 2-2-1 in her absence.

SIGNATURE WIN AT BOSTONThe Dons picked up what might be their most impressive win under
Jim Millinder when they traveled to Massachusetts and beat Boston University 1-0 on Sept. 7. After a
Jessica Nakae goal in the ninth minute of action, USF held the Terriers to five total shots with only two being on goal. Boston is the defending Patriot League champion.
Â
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GOALIEMadalyn Schiffel, who was named to the All-WCC honorable mention team last season, participated in the Team USA U-20 camp in April with some of the best college players in the country. She recorded six shutouts last season and had 10 other matches where she only allowed one goal.
Â
ABOUT SAN DIEGOSan Diego has won its last two matches, including a 2-1 upset win over No. 7 Pepperdine on Saturday. Jacqueline Altschuld logged the game-winner against the Waves and was named the WCC Player of the Week. The two to watch will be Mariah Butera and Nikki Pappalardo, who have accounted for 13 of the team's 22 assists on the season.
Â
ABOUT BYUThe Cougars started the season off low, going 2-3-2 through their first seven matches, but have picked it up over the last month. BYU has won its last nine matches and have scored multiple goals in each contest. Ashley Hatch, who was last week's WCC Player of the Week, leads BYU with 12 goals on the season, which ranks 14th in the nation.
