SAN FRANCISCO—After two heartbreaking losses over the weekend, the Dons return home to begin the final stretch of the season as they take on Pacific Northwest rivals Portland and Gonzaga in West Coast Conference action.
Â
It is the beginning of a three-game homestand to end the season with Senior Day coming on Nov. 8 against Pacific.
Â
SCHIFFEL ON VERGE OF HISTORYMadalyn Schiffel picked up her 14th career solo shutout on Sunday and is now one short of breaking the school record, which was set by Amy Voiland (1994-98). Schiffel has twice participated with Team USA camps.
Â
STARTING WITH CONSISTENCYOver the last four years, two players have remained healthy and the model of consistency and they are seniors
Jaciara Mello and
Abigail Phillips. Mello and Phillips have started in 76 and 72 games respectively in their four years with the Dons and this puts the pair in rare company. With the 76 starts, Mello currently sits only two behind Chelsea Hunt (2003-06) for the most starts in team history. Phillips sits in eighth on the team's all-time list. The pair also holds the record for the most games started by teammates.
Â
#DONSTAKEBARCAThe Dons are looking to take the trip of a lifetime as they prepare to travel to Barcelona in March. On this trip, they will become immersed in the Spanish culture and compete with teams abroad. Representing USF abroad, not only as a member of the women's soccer team, but as a student, is an honor. It is an amazing opportunity and they look to represent the University in the best way. The team is accepting donations
here.
Â
LAST TIME OUTThe Dons dropped two heartbreakers last week with losses at San Diego and BYU. USF had numerous opportunities to get on the board at San Diego, including a strike from 35 years out from
Sonja Giraud which was thwarted by a diving save. The Toreros scored in the 83rd minute on an end line cross to the front of the goal for the chip-in as USD won 1-0. San Francisco held BYU scoreless for the first 60 minutes of the match until the Cougars finally broke through and took the match 3-0.
Â
FINAL GAMES FOR SENIORSSenior Day is on Nov. 8 against Pacific and it will mark the final matches for the team's four seniors:
Mackenzie Krieser,
Abigail Phillips,
Jaciara Mello and
Celia Pellegrini. The trio of Krieser, Mello and Phillips has been the anchor for a new era of Dons soccer. Mello has started every game in her four-year career. Phillips has started in all but two matches since 2011. Krieser, who scored nine goals her sophomore season, has started in 63 games entering the weekend.
Â
TORRES' RETURNJunior defender
Leticia Torres left the team following its match at Harvard on Sept. 5 to join the Chilean National Team as they competed in Brazil in the CONMEBOL two-round FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Despite wins over Argentina and Bolivia, Chile was unable to get out of group play and into the final round. She missed five matches and the Dons went 2-2-1 in her absence.

SIGNATURE WIN AT BOSTONThe Dons picked up what might be their most impressive win under
Jim Millinder when they traveled to Massachusetts and beat Boston University 1-0 on Sept. 7. After a
Jessica Nakae goal in the ninth minute of action, USF held the Terriers to five total shots with only two being on goal. Boston is the defending Patriot League champion.
Â
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GOALIEMadalyn Schiffel, who was named to the All-WCC honorable mention team last season, participated in the Team USA U-20 camp in April with some of the best college players in the country. She recorded six shutouts last season and had 10 other matches where she only allowed one goal.
Â
ABOUT PORTLANDPortland has had a turbulent season and has only been able to win back-to-back matches once this season. The Pilots recently snapped a season-high three-game losing streak by beating Loyola Marymount 1-0 on Sunday. Danica Evans leads the team with seven goals and 16 points. The goalkeeping duties have been split between Taylor Luty and Hanna De Haan and the pair has combined to record a 1.28 GAA.
Â
ABOUT GONZAGAThe Bulldogs started conference play on fire, winning their first three matches, but have cooled off and are winless in their last three, including a tie against No. 11 Pepperdine on Sunday. Goalkeeper Christie Tombari has a 1.09 GAA, fourth in the WCC, with 69 saves, second in the WCC. Gonzaga has five players with at least three goals.
