Kevin Cronin
#13, CF
Years played: 1980
The foundation of the University of San Francisco baseball program was created by legendary Dons coach Dante Benedetti.
By sacrificing his salary, Benedetti kept the Diamond Dons program afloat, which allowed it the opportunity to grow into the program it is today. Benedetti's legacy was always built on hard work, charity, and sacrifice. That legacy is continued by one of his former players, Kevin Cronin.
A USF alumnus from the class of 1980, Cronin was a tireless worker both on and off the baseball field, and strongly represented the school and his team the way Benedetti wanted to be represented. He selflessly gave everything to the Dons on the baseball field through a tireless work ethic, and sacrificed pride to do what was best for the team by doing everything that was asked of him.
"Some guys have played all nine positions on the field," said Cronin. "I batted in all nine positions in the order."
As a student, Cronin majored in business administration and was able to use it as a stepping stone to build a career. Being an early employee of pioneering companies such as CBT Systems and ebrary, Cronin was able to take the lessons learned from playing baseball and going to school at USF into the work place with him.
"Looking back, my professional experience has not been unlike my USF baseball experience," said Cronin. "We had the fewest scholarships and worst facility in the conference, with a coach that ran a restaurant full-time and earned one dollar in salary."
"At USF, I learned to embrace the challenges of competing with larger, better-funded opposition," said Cronin.
Today, Cronin has built for himself both a successful career and a loving family. Cronin has firmly established himself as managing director for The Mehigan Company, which is a corporate real estate service that specializes in cost efficient solutions. Personally, he has had a long, successful marriage with his wife, Patt, and together have three daughters, Briana, Meagan, and Alyse.
Ultimately, it is the legacy and memory of Benedetti that has driven much of what Cronin has worked for during and after his time at USF.
This helped Cronin create the Dante Benedetti Foundation, which strives to allow disadvantaged and impoverished children to enjoy the game of baseball—just as Benedetti did in his heyday.
"The inspiration for the creation of The Dante Benedetti Foundation was the spirit and legacy of Dante Benedetti." said Cronin. "Simply put, it is all about helping kids through the game of baseball."
It is, after all, what Benedetti would want to be remembered for.
