Â
The Dons, 5-1 on the season, are off to their best start since 2012-13, when they also opened the year with by winning five of their first six games. A win over Lamar would give USF its best seven-game start since the 1999-2000 season, when the Dons bolted out of the gates by winning 12 of their first 13 games.
Â
USF bounced back from its first defeat of the season, a wild 96-90 shootout at Eastern Washington, to defeat Alcorn State, 78-65 Wednesday night on the Hilltop. Freshman
Charles Minlend led four USF players in double figures with 14 points as the Dons remained unbeaten at home.
Â
The Dons have shot 50 percent or better in four consecutive games and are now shooting 51.2 percent from the field for the season, the second-best mark in the West Coast Conference behind Saint Mary's at 53.2 percent. USF has also been effective from three-point range over the last four contests, shooting 49 percent (49-for-100), which included a school-record performance at Eastern Washington when the Dons nailed 18 treys.
Â
The scoring sheet has also become more balanced as of late. Senior
Ronnie Boyce still leads the team in scoring with a 21.7 per game mark, which is third best in the WCC, but three other Dons have joined Boyce in double figures, including junior
Chase Foster (10.8) and along with freshmen
Charles Minlend (10.3) and
Jordan Ratinho (10.2). Ratinho also ranks in the WCC's top-10 in three-point field goal percentage (8th; 52.2) and three-pointers made per game (t-7th; 2.4).
Â
After being outrebounded by 11 boards in the season opener against Illinois-Chicago, USF has not been outboarded in its last five games and are +26 in the rebound column during that stretch.
Â
Lamar brings a 4-2 season record to the Hilltop after a 77-60 loss Monday night at Idaho State. Included among the Cardinal's victories this season was a solid road win at Oregon State in the second game of the year. Junior forward Colton Weisbrod is averaging a double-double on the season, scoring 15.7 points and grabbing 10.7 rebounds a game. Junior point guard Torey Noel is averaging 7.8 points and 4.8 assists a game. One of the Southland Conference's most successful programs over the year, Lamar has made the most NCAA Tournament appearances (6) of any Southland Conference school and its five NIT appearances are also a conference high.
Â
USF has won both previous meetings with Lamar, posting a 56-46 victory in Beaumont on Dec. 30, 1997 and a 69-63 win in San Francisco on Nov. 30, 1999.
