THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco baseball team opened its home campaign with a doubleheader against San Jose State and Sacramento State, winning both to move to 4-2 on the season.
Â
USF opened the scoring in the first game against San Jose State with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a grand slam by
Michael Perri that was a no-doubter as soon as the senior shortstop made contact.
Â
Following that big inning from the Dons, sophomore pitcher
Riley Ornido kept the Spartans scoreless, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning before being replaced by freshman
Alex Pham. Ornido allowed just one walk on his day, adding three strikeouts. Pham came in and continued the performance put in by Ornido, allowing just two hits over two innings pitched.
Â
In the final two innings the Dons added four more runs to their tally, with a single from
Jonathan Allen that drove in
RJ Cordeiro. That at-bat was followed up by a double in the left field gap from Perri that allowed
Jack Winkler to score.
Â
In the second game, the Dons put together another strong pitching performance with
Landen Bourassa bouncing back from his last outing against UTSA. Bourassa went seven innings, striking out a season high 11 batters, while conceding no walks.
Â
On the offensive side, the Dons scored early and often, getting two runs in the first and adding another run in the third inning. The Dons added another five runs in three of the final five innings to complete the doubleheader sweep, beating Sac State 8-2.
