SANTEE, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's golf team looks to earn its first conference title in seven years when the West Coast Conference Championships begin Monday morning.
The WCC Championships will be held at the Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California, a 7,140-yard par-72 course. There will be a single round each day between Monday and Wednesday (April 16-18). On Monday, the Dons will tee off at #1 at 8:45 a.m. along with Pacific and Santa Clara. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
USF is one of nine teams in the tournament, the lone representative from the WCC not participating is Portland, who does not sponsor men's golf. The Dons are one of five teams currently in the top-100 in the latest Golfstat ranking. Pepperdine is tops in the WCC at No. 33, followed by BYU at No. 40, USF at No. 45, Santa Clara No. 50, Saint Mary's at No. 52. Loyola Marymount is No. 115, followed by Gonzaga at No. 125, San Diego at No. 150, and Pacific at No. 159.
The Dons will be going with their same they've employed the last few weeks: sophomore Tim Widing, freshmen Soren Lind, Toby Briggs, and Alex Chin and senior Jalen Griffin.
Griffin boasts the most experience in the WCC Championships, this will be his fourth time in the tournament, his best finish game his freshman year when he finished tied for 16th. Widing is making his second appearance in the WCC Championships, he finished third with an 8-under 208, three strokes off the lead. Lind, Briggs and Chin will all be making their first appearance at the WCC Championships, all three have recorded at least one top-10 finish in their first year on the Hilltop.
In the history of the WCC Championships, USF boasts the second most team titles with 11, only Pepperdine has more with 18. No one else has more than three. Saint Mary's has three in the last six years, while BYU was last year's winner.
The last time the Dons took home the team title was in 2011 when Taylor Travis took home individual honors with a 4-under 212. USF took him their first conference title in 1970. They won six in the 80's winning four-straight from '81- '84, they won two more in the 2000's taking home the title in 2009 and 2011.
