Series against Gonzaga: The Dons hold a slight 32-30 edge over their West Coast Conference foe, Gonzaga. Last year, Gonzaga won the series taking the first two games before USF would come out with a win in the final game of the series. In that final game
Benji Post would earn the win, while
Brendan Jenkins came on and worked two and a third inning save. The previous two series saw success for the Dons, taking two-of-three in 2016 and 2015.
Bounce Back: Both
Thomas Ponticelli and
Riley Ornido suffered their first losses of the season last weekend in the series against Loyola Marymount. Ponticelli, now 5-1, allowed uncharacteristically high 11 hits in his six innings of work. In Ornido's loss, a walk and a hit batter preceded a three-run home run that was the major blemish on the sophomore's day.
Sharpen the Pen: Following their weekend of struggles, the USF bullpen got back to their top form, throwing six innings of shutout baseball against San Jose State on Tuesday.
Joey Steele highlighted the night, striking out six of the eight batters he faced in two innings of work.
Lead-off Power: In three of the last five games,
Jonathan Allen has led off the game with a home run, two of which were on the first pitch of the game. Allen's performances so far this season have been a catalyst for the USF's offensive output. Allen's three home run in the last two weeks have him leading the team with seven.
WCC Top-10ers: The three at the top for the Dons boast some impressive stats offensively, in conference. Mike Perri and Allen rank among the top-five in conference in slugging percentage, hits, doubles and total bases. Joining those two in conference success is
Riley Helland, who breaks into top-10 in hits, doubles and total bases.
Ross Puskarich sits in fifth in RBIs following his RBI against San Jose State on Tuesday.
Friday's game is the Dons for consent baseball game, USF will be warming up in red Change the Culture t-shirts and their will be interactive activities with the crowd during the 7th inning stretch.
