UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – A low round of 285 helped the University of San Francisco men's golf team maintain its large lead over the field as the Dons ran away with the team championship at the Redhawk Invitational. USF finished the tournament with a 16-over 868 (282-301-285). Leading the charge for USF was sophomore Tim Widing who captured his first individual championship.
"It's always a special week when you can get a team and individual victory," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "All five guys contributed to the team score this week and Tim was phenomenal. Watching his first tournament victory was very fun to watch and there is no doubt there are many more in his future. This was a very tough course, played in tough conditions after a grueling week of eight rounds in seven days. I was extremely proud of our mental, physical, and emotional toughness. We can't wait to rest and start to prepare for a fun ride through the post season."
As Coach Kennedy mentioned, Widing captured his first individual championship after finishing the tournament with a 3-under 68 at the Par 71 Chambers Bay Golf Course. Widing carded five birdies on the day, giving him 13 for the tournament. After 54 holes, Widing scored a 5-under 208, his third tournament under par this year.
Toby Briggs finished the tournament tied for fifth with a 4-over 217 after 54 holes. He wrapped up the tournament with a 1-under 70, his seventh round under par this season, after carding six birdies in the final round.
Jalen Griffin and Alex Chin finished tied for 12th. Griffin finished 10-over 223 and had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 1-over 72. Chin secured his second top-15 finish of the spring when he recorded a 4-over 75.
Freshman Soren Lind was the fifth Don to post a top-20 finish. Lind wrapped up the tournament with an 11-over 224 after he carded a 5-over 76 on the afternoon.
After playing back-to-back tournaments over the last five days the Dons will be off until Monday, April 16 when they travel to San Diego, Calif., to participate in the West Coast Conference Championships.
