Senior Emily Laskin Named Co-Winner of #WCCREPRESENT

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Senior women's golf captain and Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) President, Emily Laskin, has been named the Co-Winner of the prestigious #WCCREPRESENT Award as announced by the conference office.

The #WCCREPRESENT award is unique as it may honor a student-athlete, team, or campus SAAC for initiatives that promote the positive WCC SAAC values of sportsmanship and community service. The winner is recognized for efforts to represent the #WCCREPRESENT tagline: Our Conference. Our School. Our Team. Ourselves.

"What an honor and well-deserved award this is for Emily," said head women's golf coach Sara Doell. "She is the true representation of what a student-athlete should be. She works hard in the classroom, on the golf course, in the gym and to represent and lead her team to excellence. Her passion for golf, the USF Athletic Department and for the WCC is unparalleled. Emily has led by example – showing up to every athletic event at USF that she possibly can. She sets the standard for community involvement as she has volunteered with First Tee, Harper for Kids, Best Buddies and the Golf Channel. She encourages others to be involved as well. I am proud of her and excited to see what she does after college. She is someone who will absolutely change the world from here."

Laskin is the definition of the #WCCREPRESENT award. Throughout her time here at the University of San Francisco, she has made the Four Pillars her driving force; which she has demonstrated with her achievements: in the classroom as a two-time all-academic honor, (3.82 cumulative GPA), on the course (All WCC Honors), work in the community, and being a leader in the world (SAAC president, WCC Representative).

She has made her biggest impact on the USF student-athlete experience. Laskin transferred here after her freshman year and saw the need for SAAC. She has worked diligently over the last three years to develop the program from an inconsistent group of six student-athletes to a regularly meeting group of 15-20 fellow student-athletes, including having all teams represented.

Laskin has thrown herself into student-athlete driven events like the Dons Challenge (student-athlete orientation), Title IX education program, and Hilltop Awards program. She has earned the respect of our administrators, fans, and fellow student-athletes via her hard work and reliability. She has become the first person everyone thinks of when the athletic department needs student-athlete involvement or a project handled with care.

While women's golf may not be the most visible team on campus, Emily has made it her mission to make herself visible to the athletic community. She attends all sporting events, cheering on her fellow student-athletes in a positive manner, no matter what their record.

This year, Coach Doell asked the team to come up with one word that would embody the upcoming year, for Laskin that word was "legacy."

"I am very proud to say that she has achieved creating a legacy for herself here," said Nicki Graham, Associate Athletic Trainer and SAAC advisory. "She will be very missed in the upcoming years, but she has created an environment within the student-athlete experience that sets them up for success. She has brought along younger student-athletes to continue her vision and where SAAC at USF needs to be."

The West Coast Conference will honor Emily and her co-winner Kevin Maeda, a men's cross-country runner from Pepperdine, at the WCC Honors Dinner, June 6, 2018 in San Jose, Calif.
