Dons Honor John Duggan Sr. with Jim Brovelli Award

SAN FRANCISCO -- John Duggan Sr., graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep '59 and University of San Francisco '63, is this year's Jim Brovelli Award recipient for his outstanding loyalty, commitment, and dedication to USF's basketball programs.

Coach Duggan has been a life changing leader and mentor to many youth organizations in the San Francisco basketball community. Having coached at St. Paul's CYO throughout his high school and college years, he went on to serve St. Stephen's CYO for over two decades. In fact, he still coaches his granddaughter's team today and loves to see them compete. John coached high school basketball at his alma mater, St. Ignatius College Prep, for 11 years, and at the collegiate level at City College.

Despite his countless hours spent at the iconic Original Joe's restaurant, John uses his spare time giving back to the city he loves as a coach for his granddaughter's team and the Urban High School Girls' Basketball team. In recognition of his lifetime of service to the Catholic Youth Organization, he was inducted into the CYO Hall of Fame in 2017, and will be presented with the Christ the King Award at St. Ignatius College Prep in the fall of 2018.

The Duggan Family connection to USF is thriving, with John Sr. having served as a past President of the Century Club and John's wife, Marie, also a USF alumna, celebrating her Golden Reunion this year with the class of '68.  Their son, John Jr., competed for the Dons in Men's Basketball from '93-'97 and still ranks 22nd all-time with 1,175 career points. He was named to the WCC All-Academic Team in '96 and '97.  After six years playing professionally in Europe, he returned to earn a graduate degree from USF in Sports Management '04.  Daughter Elena, is also an alumna of '95 and completes the family tradition of Jesuit education on the Hilltop.

Together, the family is as influential and devoted to the city of San Francisco as they are to our basketball community.  The University of San Francisco is a better place because of their thoughtful leadership and commitment to serving the University and our community.

When not on the floor at Original Joe's, you can find John on a different hardwood, engaging with young people through sport and creating a lasting positive impact through his positivity, or in his courtside seats at War Memorial Gym where his enthusiasm inspires our team to Aim Higher! His unselfish life of service, love, and loyalty truly embodies the USF philosophy of "change the world from here."

Please join us in celebrating John Duggan Sr. at the annual Tip-Off Gala, on Friday, October 5th at the Julia Morgan Ballroom. To register to the Dons Tip-Off Gala please click here.
