WSOC | Dons Strike First But Broncos Get the Win

SANTA CLARA – The game opened with plenty of promise for the University of San Francisco women's soccer team as Samantha Jehnings scored in the third minute off a pass from Miciah Madison. Unfortunately for the Dons (10-8-2/3-5-1 WCC), No. 20 Santa Clara (13-5-2/7-0-2 WCC) responded with six unanswered goals to win 6-1 in the 2019 finale.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Dons struck first in the third minute when Samantha Jehnings took the pass from Miciah Madison and beat the keeper for her 11th of the season.  The Dons 1-0 advantage did not last long however as the Broncos scored the equalizer in the eighth minute.

• With the scored knotted up at 1-1, the Dons had a great chance to retake the lead when Madison found herself along at the top of the box, unfortunately for the Dons' forward, her shot sailed wide right of the net.

• From there, the afternoon belonged to the home team, as the Broncos scored two more times in the half.  The game winner came in the 23rd minute when Machaela George's shot from 25 yards out bounced off the cross bar and in.  The Broncos went into the intermission leading 3-1.

• Out of the break Santa Clara put the game away, scoring three more times.  USF was unable to put another score on the board.  Senior keeper Olivia Camera finished the game with 10 saves.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
10:  USF finishes with 10 wins on the year, it is just the 10th time in program history.  The Dons have accomplished that feat three times now under head coach Jim Millinder.
10: Madison's 10th assist on the season moves her into a tie for second in a single season with Jannik Abel who did that in 1994. Madison already owned the single season record for assists in a season with 11 accomplished last year.
11: The goal by Jehning's was her 11th of the season, matching her career best from last season.  The 11 goals is tied for fourth most in a single season.
275: With her 10 saves today, Olivia Camera finishes her career with 275 saves which is believed to be second most all-time.  Camera trails only Madalyn Schiffel (2012-15) who had 296 in her career. Camera also finished with a career-best 10 wins.
