SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Orlando Smart, one of the greatest guards to play on the Hilltop will be inducted into the West Coast Conference's 11

The 2019 WCC Hall of Honor class includes: BYU's Tiffany Lott-Hogan (Track), Gonzaga's Adam Morrison (Men's Basketball), Loyola Marymount's Tara Welling (Erdmann) (Cross Country/Track), Pacific's Jayne McHugh (Volleyball), Pepperdine's Gualberto Escudero (Tennis), Portland's Stephanie Lopez Cox (Soccer), Saint Mary's Trevor Newquist (Soccer), San Diego's Ali Cox (Rowing), Orlando Smart, and Santa Clara's Caren Horstmeyer (Basketball).
"Orlando was the best point guard that I ever coached," said USF Hall of Famer Jim Brovelli who coached Smart from 1991-94. "He always had the great ability to make the right decision to the right guy at the right time in critical situations. And he did it in a very unassuming way, moreover, he was a great team player. This is a great honor for him, and really well deserved. His record, I believe, will probably never be broken. As great a player as Orlando was – he's an even better person."
The Hall of Honor class will be formally inducted at the WCC Hall of Honor Brunch on Saturday, March 9 at 9 a.m. PT at the Mardi Gras Ballroom in the Orleans Hotel and each inductee will be honored throughout the course of the basketball championships.
"The West Coast Conference is honored to celebrate the accomplishments of these former student-athletes and coaches as we celebrate the enduring legacy of our 11th induction class during the WCC Basketball Championships in Las Vegas," said West Coast Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez. "The 2019 Hall of Honor class represents our 10 schools' long-standing commitment to developing student-athletes by fostering an environment of athletic and academic excellence. This year's inductees excelled in a wide variety of sports while showcasing diverse paths to the top of their chosen athletic pursuits."
A native of Austin, Texas, Smart was the ultimate modern point guard – dishing out 902 assists while scoring 1,532 points over four seasons. He is one of just three players in USF history to score 1,000 points and record 400 or more assists. The 902 assists are not only a WCC and USF record, it still ranks 14th in the NCAA. His 7.78 assists per game is 10

After graduating from USF, Smart took his career overseas and played professionally in Poland for Slask Wroclaw. Smart also played professionally in the United States in the Southwest Basketball League while earning league MVP honors in the 1997-1998 season.
Smart joins former USF standings Joe Ellis (basketball), Bob St. Clair (football, Steve Negoesco (soccer), K.C. Jones (basketball), Mary Hile-Nepfel (basketball), Ollie Johnson (basketball), Jim Brovelli (basketball), Bill Cartwright), and Brittany Lindhe (basketball) in the WCC's Hall of Honor, which inducted its first class in 2009.
