SPOKANE, Wash. – After the opening round of the WCC Championships University of San Francisco women's golf team sits in fifth place after shooting a 26-over 310 at the par-71 Manito Golf and Country Club.
Collectively, the Dons struggled on the green in the front-9, collecting just one birdie as a team. On the back-9 USF was much stronger as the Dons carded eight birdies as a team. There were no low scores on the day as only one player out of 25 in the tournament finished even par.
"Tough day for the Dons in our first round," said head coach
Sara Doell. "We certainly left a lot of shots out there as the putter seemed to big our biggest problem. Regardless, the team has their heads held high and we look forward to rebounding tomorrow."
Freshman
Annika Borrelli is the Dons' leader after 18. She finished the day with a 3-over 74 which has her in a three-way tie at sixth, just three back the leader. Borrelli opened the round four over on the front, but birdies on 13, 14, and 17 saw her 1-under on the back. She was on fire on the par-3 and par-5s today, leading the tournament in average scores for both holes. On the par-3 she boasted an average score of 2.50 and was 2-under. On the par-5s she averaged 4.33 and was also 2-under.
Sophomore
Pearl Rojanapeansatith finished in second for the Dons at 5-over which puts her in a tie at 14
th. Rojanapeansatith was a steady performer for USF on the day, she opened the round with pars on 13 of the first 14 holes. She ran into trouble on 15,16, and 17 before carding a birdie on 18.
The remaining three Dons all finished in order: 22nd, 23rd, and 24
th on the day.
Joan Soewondo finished the round with an 8-over 79.
Jade Siphomsay is in 23
rd with a 10-over 81, she is followed by
Samantha Gong who is 24
th with an 11-over 82.
Gonzaga is the team leader after the first round, the Bulldogs finished the day with an 8-over 292. The individual leader is the Bulldogs' Quynn Duong who carded an even par 71.
The Dons will return to action tomorrow morning, they tee off at 8:00 a.m. with Santa Clara on the first tee.
