SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's golf team finished the opening day of the Bruin Wave Invitational Monday in ninth with a 46-over 619 at the par-72 San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Playing in the one of the strongest fields the Dons have competed in this season, USF responded with a better second round to finish one stroke ahead of conference rival Pepperdine.
"The team fought hard today through some windy conditions on a tough golf course," said USF head coach
Sara Doell. "The team identified a few key areas that we can improve upon tomorrow. We look forward to a strong finish."
USF had two players in the top-25 and were led by
Annika Borrelli, who finished tied for 15th with a 6-over 150 (73-77). Birdies were hard to come by on Monday with only one player in the tournament finishing with more than 10 on the day. Borrelli carded a birdie on the par-4 second in the opening round and on the par-3 14th in the second round. The sophomore finished with 26 pars on the day.
In second for USF is freshman
Toni Sottile who finished tied for 24th with an 8-over 152 (76-76). In just her second career tournament, Sottile carded a team-high five birdies on the day – four coming in the back nine. Her five birdies are tied for 13th most in the tournament.
Pearl Rojanapeansatith was the Dons' No. 3 golfer with a 10-over 154 (79-75). Freshman
Hannah Zeman made her collegiate debut on Monday shooting a 19-over 163 (82-81).
Samantha Gong finished the day in 60th place with a 29-over 173 (86-87).
No. 2 Southern California is the team leader after 36 holes. The Trojans finished the day with a 6-over 582 (300-282). They were the only team to post a round under par. Northwestern's Kelly Sim is the individual leader after two rounds. Sim finished the afternoon with an 8-under 136 (67-69).
USF will tee off at 7:35 a.m. on the 10
