SAN FRANCISCO – 22 home contests, 32 away games, three series against Pac-12 schools, and seven series against NCAA Regional teams is what awaits the University of San Francisco baseball team in 2021. The season, set to open February 19 in Southern California, was officially announced Thursday afternoon.
The Dons (9-8, 0-0 WCC) will once again host four teams that made the regionals from 2019 and play three others. USF opens the year against the second ranked UCLA Bruins for a three-game series down at Jackie Robinson Stadium starting Friday, Feb. 19.
"We are very excited about playing one of the most competitive schedules in the country," said head coach Nino Giarratano. "We are going to be challenged with the non-conference portion of our schedule. We open against UCLA - ranked one or two in many top 25 polls, and we play Stanford, one of the elite programs in the country, with four game series. We also have a series against Cal, another PAC-12 program, with home and home. UC Santa Barbara is ranked in the top 15 in most polls this year. To top it off, a very competitive WCC schedule should make for a great return to baseball."
The schedule doesn't let up. Five of the Dons first six opponents reached the 2019 regionals. Following the three-game, season-opening series against the Bruins, the Dons will travel north for a midweek game against Fresno State on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
The following weekend USF will play a split home/road series against California. The Dons will head to Berkeley for the first two games on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25 and 26, before making their 2021 home debut against the Golden Bears on Saturday and Sunday. USF will remain in the Bay Area the following week, hosting San Jose State on Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond before another home/road split series with the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford will host USF at Sunken Diamond Thursday Mar. 4 and Friday, Mar. 5 before switching venues to the Hilltop for the weekend on Mar. 6 and 7.
The final non-conference series before West Coast Conference play will take place Mar. 12-14 when the Dons will play four games against No. 11 UC Santa Barbara at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The following week, USF begins WCC play starting with a non-conference matchup against Saint Mary's on Tuesday in Moraga. The Dons host Pepperdine for a three-game slate Mar. 19-21.
After the second Tuesday matchup with San Jose State at home on Tuesday, Mar. 23, USF will travel to Provo, Utah to take on BYU for three games Mar. 25-27. USF opens April with a three-game series against LMU April 1-3 before returning to the road.
The Dons will play back-to-back road WCC series starting with three games at Santa Clara April 9-11. After that, they travel to San Diego to take on the Toreros April 16-18.
The Portland Pilots will come to the Hilltop for a three-game series starting Friday, April 23. The Dons wrap up April and open May in Stockton, Calif., for a three-game series at Pacific.
May 7-9 the Dons will host Saint Mary's for three-games. They will wrap up the weekend traveling to Moraga for their final contest against the Gales on May 10 at Louis Guisto Field.
May 14-16 USF will play their final non-conference weekend series, splitting a four-game set with Sacramento State. The Dons will host the Hornets on Friday the 14th and Sunday the 16th. USF and Sac State will play a double-header on Saturday in Sacramento on the 15th.
The Dons will play their final road series May 21-23 when they travel to Spokane, Wash for a three-game series against Gonzaga. The regular season will conclude with split series with rival Santa Clara May 28-30. The Dons will host the Broncos Friday the 28th and Sunday the 30th and will travel to Santa Clara on Saturday.
