SAN FRANCISCO – University of San Francisco fourth year junior Alex Pham was selected by the Baltimore Orioles on the third day of the Major League Baseball Frist Year Player Draft. Pham, a native of Union City, Calif., was selected in the 19th round with the 557th pick.
The four-time letter winner was one of six players from the WCC drafted on Tuesday, giving the conference 13 players selected in the three day draft. Pham is the second USF player selected in the draft joining Jack Winkler, who was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th round yesterday. The Dons joined Gonzaga, Pepperdine, Saint Mary's, and San Diego as the only schools in the conference to have more than one player selected in the draft.
The four-time letter winner had a tremendous career on the Hilltop. A two-time WCC Honorable Mention honoree, he appeared in 73 games making seven starts. He went 9-11 in his career, in 182.1 innings pitched he 215 strike outs which ranks in the top-10 all-time in USF history.
This season, Pham earned all-conference honors following a strong season that saw him win three games, tally four saves and struck out 72 in 55.1 innings pitched.
Pham becomes the 117th player drafted in USF history, and the seventh player drafted by the Orioles. He is the first player drafted by Baltimore since Don Lyons was drafted in the third round in 1973.
Under Giarratano, the Dons have seen 56 players selected to the draft. USF has now had a player drafted in 16 of the last 17 seasons, dating to 2004.
