SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball program and head coach
Rob DiToma officially announced the completion of the program's staff on Monday, Sept. 12.
Joining the Dons from various institutions around the country,
Erik Supplee (Columbia) and
Kyle Hunt (Nevada) will serve as the program's new assistant coaches while
Kyle Coburn (previously Director of Operations) will now serve as the program's volunteer assistant coach. Additionally,
Ryan Gaynor has now joined the staff as USF's new Director of Operations.
Erik Supplee:
Serving as the pitching coach at Columbia for the past seven seasons, Supplee enjoyed tremendous success while with the Lions, including his staff guiding the team to multiple Ivy League crowns. This past season, Columbia advanced to the Blacksburg Regional final in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, which included knocking off WCC champion Gonzaga twice. Prior to his stop at Columbia, Suppleee spent the 2015 season at Georgetown. While with the Hoyas, he helped the team to their first appearance in the Big East championship since 1986 as well as two of his pitchers earning all-conference honors for the first time since 2007. Supplee also had a two-year stint at Wake Forest in 2013 + 2014, where the Demon Deacons won a combined 58 games in his two seasons in Winston-Salem. In 2013, he served as the director of operations before being elevated to volunteer assistant coach in 2014. Before his time at Wake Forest, Supplee also had stops at Lynchburg College and Millersville University, where he began his coaching career in 2008.
DiToma on Supplee: "Erik brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the development of pitchers that he has coached at his various stops. Most recently at Columbia University, he became well known nationally with his ability to recruit talented baseball players from all over the country. The amount of success he has had in recruitment and development in the past helped lead Columbia to Ivy league championships and NCAA regional game victories. We are very lucky to have Erik on our staff."
Kyle Hunt:
Hired in August of 2019 by head coach T.J. Bruce as a volunteer assistant coach, Hunt has spent the past three seasons with the Nevada Wolfpack, specifically serving as the team's third base coach. In 2021, Hunt helped the Wolf Pack capture their third Mountain West regular season championship and their first since the 2018 season. Due to the conference tournament not being held in 2021, the Wolf Pack also earned the league's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals, the program's first trip to regionals since 2000 and its fifth trip overall in program history. As a player, Hunt played for the Pack from 2012-15 and posted a career batting average of .244 with 203 starts, 37 doubles, eight homers and 86 RBI. Hunt was part of the Pack's first ever Mountain West regular season championship in 2015 where he had a career-best fielding percentage of .971 and batted .261 with 27 RBI. Following his playing career, Hunt served as an undergrad assistant in 2016 before being elevated to Director of Player Development and On-Campus Recruiting in 2017. Before returning to Nevada, Hunt spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Irvine Valley Community College, where he coached the infielders.
DiToma on Hunt: "As I began the search for my staff, one name that kept being recommended to me repeatedly by coaches who I respect, was
Kyle Hunt. Kyle grew up in Southern California and brings an extensive knowledge to our program from his playing and coaching career. Kyle was in charge of the offensive side of the ball at the University of Nevada and will bring excitement and energy to our program. His knowledge of the west coast will also be extremely valuable in the recruiting process for us.
Kyle Coburn:
Coburn enters his second year on the Hilltop and his first as volunteer assistant coach. In his first season at USF, he held the title of Director of Baseball Operations. Coburn was responsible for coordinating team travel, budget planning, on-campus recruiting and the day-to-day operations of the baseball program. A Southern California native, Coburn attended Huntington Beach High School and was the starting second baseman for the Oilers 2015 CIF Championship team. In 2020-21, Coburn returned to the program as the assistant junior varsity coach.
Coburn graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Oregon in 2019. Currently, he is on track to graduate with a master's degree in sport management from USF in December of 2022.
DiToma on Coburn: "I am very excited to elevate
Kyle Coburn from the Director of Operations position that he served in last year, to an Assistant Coach role on this year's staff. From the day I was hired, Kyle has been extremely helpful to me in every single aspect of the process of trying to get the program back up and running. He has shown loyalty to the direction we are headed and I am extremely excited for his role to grow here in the program."
Ryan Gaynor:
Gaynor comes to the Hilltop after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at George Washington in 2021. Previously, he also served as the manager for the Waterloo Bucks of the summer collegiate Northwoods League as well as a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. A graduate of Arizona State, Gaynor also has previous coaching experience with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders of the Northwoods League and Santa Barbara City College. Prior to SBCC, he spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, four of which were as the head of the Player Development program. With the Pirates, his responsibilities included data and video collection to aid advance scouting that was to be used for player acquisition, coaching and evaluation.
DiToma on Gaynor: "Ryan is a great addition to our staff. He is very knowledgeable of important elements to a successful Division I baseball program both on and off the field. He came highly recommended from George Washington University, and we will all benefit from what Ryan will bring to our program."
