SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After guiding the University of San Francisco women's basketball program last season, sparking the team off the bench,
Jasmine Gayles has been named to the 2023-24 WCC Preseason Team, as announced by the conference Wednesday morning.
"Jasmine's greatest value to our team these past two years has been her toughness, tenacity and heart," Head Coach
Molly Goodenbour said. "I believe she will compete at an All-Conference level this season, and I'm happy that the other WCC coaches have recognized her as one of the top returning players in the league."
Propelling San Francisco to 19 wins last season, the most since 2015-16, Gayles helped guide the Dons to a fourth-place finish in the conference standings and a third straight WNIT appearance.
In her second season with the green and gold, Gayles ranked third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.1 points per game in 32 games off the bench. Gayles, the reigning WCC Sixth Woman of the Year, reached double figures in 18 games while tallying a career-high 23 points twice in wins over Cal State East Bay and Colorado State.
The graduate student from Seattle, Wash., reached multiple milestones a season ago, including surpassing 1,000 career points after scoring a team-high 19 points in a win over San Diego State on December 4, 2022, at Chase Center.
Gayles highlights a team that returns six players from last season's roster selected to finish seventh, according to the 2023-24 WCC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Dons received 31 points, while Gonzaga (64 points), Portland (50 points), Pacific (41 points), and Santa Clara (41 points) were slotted as the league's top teams.
"Our team has a lot of new players," Goodenbour added. "We will be different from previous seasons so success will require a complete team effort. We will need to be gritty and competitive in each possession. I'm excited to see how we develop and to watch people grow into different roles."
San Francisco opens the 2023-24 season on the road, facing off against UC Santa Barbara on November 7 and takes on Stanislaus State in the home opener at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center on November 9.
