Baseball Returns Home to Host Spartans

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning back to the Hilltop with the end of the 2023 season approaching, the USF Dons baseball team (16-26, 7-17) is back to work on their home diamond as they will welcome the San José State Spartans (22-22, 15-11) to the Hilltop on Tuesday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m. from Benedetti Diamond.

Looking to bounce back from a tough weekend in Santa Clara where they dropped three close games against the Broncos, the Dons are excited to return to their home field where they have won back-to-back games in walk-off fashion when they bested Saint Mary's at the end of April.

THINGS TO KNOW:
  • Putting together a strong weekend to continue his tremendous fourth season on the Hilltop, Harris Williams III clobbered his eighth home run of the season on Sunday afternoon to take the team lead in that category. While not only providing offensive thump, Williams III has showcased his tremendous speed with 21 stolen bases that continue to lead the West Coast Conference.
  • Excelling throughout the season at the plate and playing three positions in the Dons' infield, Mario DeMera is the team's leading hitter with a .360 batting average that's good for fifth in the WCC while also posting a sky high .436 on-base percentage.
  • On the mound, Adam Shew turned in his second straight strong outing for USF over the weekend as he threw five innings of one run ball in the team's extra innings loss on Saturday while also striking out six Santa Clara hitters.
  • Continuing his strong power season at the plate, Christian Stapleton was able to match Williams III for the team lead as he drove his eighth home run over the wall in right field late in Sunday's game. Stapleton's 38 RBI so far this season currently leads the Dons and ranks tied for sixth in the WCC.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS:
  • San José State currently stands at a .500 record for the season going 22-22 so far and 15-11 in the Mountain West Conference. In their first matchup with the Dons on their home diamond earlier this season, the Spartans were able to best the Dons back in March.
  • Leading the way for San José State at the plate this season has been redshirt junior infielder Hunter Dorraugh who's started in all 44 of his team's games while posting a .344 batting average with six home runs and 34 RBI with a .998 OPS for his team.
  • A key arm in the Spartans' staff this season has been sophomore right-handed pitcher Nathan Hansen who has made 15 appearances this season throwing 23 1/3 innings with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP this season.
