SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (1-1) opened the 2024 season with a doubleheader split against Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) , earning a 4-2 win in the opening game before narrowly falling 5-4 in the nightcap Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
GAME ONE:
- Fairleigh Dickinson got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning, taking the first lead of the game after an RBI groundout from Brian Roberts plated Joan Sosa, giving the Knights a 1-0 advantage.
- San Francisco bounced back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Zack Ramppen connected on a two-RBI single to put the Dons up 2-1. After three straight two-out walks to Matty Fung, AJ Guiliana, and Michael Campagna, Ramppen, down 0-2 in the count, lofted a base hit into centerfield to plate Fung and Guiliana.
- The Dons built on their advantage three innings later, when Kody Watanabe sent a two-RBI double into the gap in right-center field, extending the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Recording his first hit as a member of the green and gold, Watanabe gave the Dons two insurance runs after Mattie Thomas and Tyvon Moore earned walks earlier in the inning to get onto the basepath.
- FDU cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh inning on a Zack Will RBI double to left field. A Guiliana fielding error allowed Brelon Harden to score from first base.
- After Adam Shew earned the starting nod, Andrew Hazell shut down the Knights in the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit while totaling seven strikeouts in his first-ever outing for the Dons.
GAME TWO:
- San Francisco capitalized on multiple FDU mistakes and gained its first lead of the game, 2-0, in the third inning. Logan Schweizer kickstarted the Dons' scoring efforts with a leadoff single, while Moore followed with a hit-by-pitch.
- The Dons quickly put runners into scoring position as Schweizer and Moore pulled off a double steal with one out on the board. Schweizer later scored on a Fung RBI groundout, and Moore plated the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
- FDU answered in the top of the fourth, torching starting pitcher Blake Shepardson for three runs on two hits.
- Moore began a rally in the sixth, leading off the inning with a double to left field. Moore quickly made his way around the basepath and scored the tying run on a Ramppen RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
- FDU regained the lead in the ninth inning, scoring two runs to take a 5-3 advantage. San Francisco rallied in the final half inning, as Jackson Nystrom sent a single to left field, scoring Ramppen from third base to cut the deficit to 5-4.
- The Dons' rally unfortunately came up short as Myles Kallinger, a pitch runner for Nystrom, was thrown out at second base trying to advance into scoring position.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Shew, the opening-day starter, helped guide the Dons to a win in the first game of the doubleheader with a stellar six-inning performance, allowing only one run on four hits while recording three strikeouts.
- Hazell capped off the win for the Dons, earning his first career save as he totaled seven strikeouts in three relief innings.
- Offensively, seven players recorded hits throughout the two games. Moore led the team with three runs, stole one base, and totaled a .500 on-base percentage.
