Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins Joins Athletics Administration

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Director of Athletics Larry Williams and the University of San Francisco athletics department announced Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins as the new Deputy Athletics Director, Administration and Facilities SWA.

"I am absolutely thrilled that Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins is joining our team on the Hilltop," said Williams. "Stephanie is an accomplished leader in intercollegiate athletics with broad experience as a former student athlete, coach and multifaceted administrator. Importantly, she has deep Bay Area roots and a strong desire to foster the success of our student athletes and the University of San Francisco. She will be an invaluable colleague to me and our entire community."

A native of the Bay Area, Shrieve-Hawkins was hired as the Director of Athletics at San Francisco State University in May 2018. As a season collegiate administrator with over 20 years of leadership experience, she was named to the Division II Athletics Directors (D2 ADA) Board of Directors for the 2020-21 membership year.

"I am both honored and excited to take on this leadership role with USF Athletics," said Shrieve-Hawkins. "The dedication and values upheld by the university and its athletic department already inspire me, and I am eager to contribute as the newest member of the leadership team. I look forward to meeting the student-athletes, coaches, and administration and to supporting the excellence and growth of the next generation of leaders. I want to extend my gratitude to Director of Athletics Larry Williams and his leadership team for this incredible opportunity and their trust in me to serve in this important role, as well as to President Paul J. Fitzgerald and Vice President Charlie Cross for their unwavering support of intercollegiate athletics at USF. This is truly an exciting time for the Dons and I am thrilled to be a part of it!"

Prior to her time at SF State, Shrieve-Hawkins served as the Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Compliance Officer at Saint Mary's College of California in Morga from July 2006 to April 2018. Her duties with the Gaels included supervising multiple sport programs, academic and student services, sports medicine, strength and conditioning and internal operations. She also provided guidance on NCAA compliance issues.

Before this role, she also served as the Associate Director of Athletics - Student Services/Senior Women Administrator at UC Irvine from Sept. 2004 to Aug. 2006. Prior to this position, Shrieve-Hawkins served as the Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator at Saint Mary's from Sept. 2000 to Aug. 2004.

Although she has been in administration for over two decades, Shrieve-Hawkins also has experience as a coach as she served as an assistant women's volleyball coach at University of California-Berkeley from Mar. 1997 to 1998. Additionally, she also was the head volleyball coach at Starlings Volleyball (Apr. 1998-Dec. 1999) in Oakland, Calif. and Contra Costa College (July 1996-June 1997) in San Pablo, Calif.

Notably, she first got her start in the academic world as a substitute teacher for the Hayward and Oakland School Districts in Jan. 1994 before moving on to become an elementary school teacher in West Contra Costa School District in Jan. 1996.

Personally, Shrieve-Hawkins was a standout volleyball player at California State University, Fullerton. Named team captain her junior and senior years, the San Francisco native finished her time on campus as the all-time career assist record holder, an honor she would hold for 12 years. Additionally, she also finished in Fullerton's top ten all-time in assists, blocks and aces. In the classroom, she was named to the Honor Roll/Dean's List in 1990 and 1991 as she also earned the All-Big West Scholar Athlete Award those same years.

Ultimately, she graduated from Fullerton with her bachelor's degree in child development and humanities. While Saint Mary's, Shrieve-Hawkins obtained her master's degree in kinesiology. Most recently, she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice at CSU East Bay in 2024.

Back in the Bay Area, Shrieve-Hawkins was inducted into the Berkeley High School Athletics Hall of Fame in May 2019. That same month, she was featured in the San Francisco Business times as one of the Bay Area's Most Influential Women in Business.
