Malik Thomas Named USBWA National Player of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) has named five Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week for games of the week ending Sunday, Jan. 5.

For San Francisco, Malik Thomas earned the prestigious honor after also being named WCC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and third time in the last three weeks on Monday. Alongside Thomas, Cooper Flagg (Duke), Leo Colimerio (Queens), Melvin Council Jr. (St. Bonaventure) and Chaz Lanier (Tennessee) also earned the award this week.

For the 2024-25 season, the USBWA continues its national player of the week program that has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. Prior to last season, the USBWA had recognized just one player each week.

Each Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members will select five standouts from the 31 Division I conference players of the week to be recognized. This week's selections were chosen from a list of the conferences that named a player of the week on Monday.

Overall, Thomas finished the second week of conference play with averages of 29.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game.

Beginning with their first road test of WCC action, Thomas willed San Francisco to an 89-81 win at Pacific on Thursday, Jan. 2 as the guard finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.

Less than 48 hours later, Thomas put together arguably his most dominant half in his career as he scored 27 of his game-high 34 points in the first half at Washington State on Saturday, Jan. 4. Although the Dons fell to the Cougars, Thomas finished one point shy of his career-high as he also added three rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block against WSU.
