Darold Brown Joins Baseball Staff as Director of Player Development

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Head Coach Rob DiToma and the University of San Francisco baseball team have announced the hiring of Darold "D. Brown" Brown as the program's Director of Player Development, bringing decades of experience in professional baseball and athlete development.
"Darold Brown brings a lifetime of experience to our staff," DiToma said. "He will be the veteran set of eyes overseeing all aspects of our program. He was a professional baseball scout for years for various MLB clubs, and he will help show our players and programs what being a professional looks like. Darold brings an element that our program has been missing, and we are excited for it."
Brown enters his first season on the Hilltop with an extensive baseball resume that spans over three decades. Before joining the Dons, he spent 19 years as a Major League Baseball (MLB) scout, earning a reputation for identifying, evaluating, recruiting, and developing talent at the highest level. His professional scouting career included key roles with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers, where he helped evaluate and project amateur and professional players across the country.
Before transitioning into scouting, Brown played nine seasons of professional baseball after being selected by the Houston Astros in the 1992 MLB Draft and signing with the Atlanta Braves as a left-handed pitcher in 1993. Despite pitching only three innings during his amateur career, he successfully converted to the mound before a major back injury ultimately ended his playing career.
Brown also served three seasons as Director of Pitching at West Valley College, helping lead the program to back-to-back California Community College Final Four appearances while overseeing pitcher development and implementing modern training and performance strategies.
A Bay Area native, with deep roots on the East Side of San Jose, Brown attended El Cerrito High School, Laney Junior College, and Morehouse College. Throughout his professional journey, he has shared clubhouses and professional experiences with MLB Hall of Famers and some of the game's most iconic players, shaping a player-first philosophy centered on development, preparation, accountability, and relationships.
