What 2 Watch 4
Katarina Pilepic leads the squad in total kills (345), kills per set (3.79) and points (384.5), standing in the WCC top 10 in each category.Â
Freshman
Madison Murtagh has been a stout presence at the net, compiling 106 total blocks to rate fifth overall in the WCC, and the top freshman in the league. She stands in third in the conference in hitting percentage with a mark of .334. Sophomore
Oluoma Okaro is one spot behind, hitting .329 on the season to hold down the fourth-best percentage in the league.
Setting duties have been split between the duo of
Kiara McKibben and
Jurja Vlasic, with McKibben pacing the team with 589 assists for the Dons. Libero
Kim Gutierrez leads the squad with 292 digs, or 4.00 per set, to help anchor USF's defensive efforts, but she sophomore from National City, Calif., has been sidelined with injury in recent matches.
By the Numbers
Kim Gutierrez … needs five digs to move to 15th on the all-time list passing Jaime Schopflin (801 digs; 96-98), 26 digs to move to 14th and 36 digs to leap to 13th all-time.
Kiara McKibben … stands in seventh on the career assists tally after passing Leanna Ludes (1783 assists; 09-12) earlier this season, and needs 39 assists to become the seventh Don to reach the 2,000-assist mark.
Katarina Pilepic … is climbing up the USF records books and passed up Laura Tinetti to own 11th place just over a week ago. She needs just 15 kills to be the 11th woman to hit 1,000 kills in her career as a Don, and 26 more kills will put her in 10th all-time at USF.Â
Madison Murtagh ... reached the 100-block plateau in her first season on the Hilltop in USF match at Gonzaga, and now .Â
Currently, Murtagh and
Oluoma Okaro's attack percentage would rank as eighth and nine, respectively, in the USF single-season record books.
Know the Foes
Pepperdine enters the weekend with a 16-11 overall record and a conference mark of 7-7. The Waves are paced by a trio on the attack, with Nikki Lyons' 278 kills, or 2.93 per set, leading the way. Heidi Dyer adds 2.68 kills per set and Tarah Wylie posts 2.48 kills per set, on a team-best .338 hitting percentage. She has also denied 109 balls at the net Becca Strehlow directs the squad from the setting position, tallying 10.22 assists per set.Â
Loyola Marymount stands at 19-7 on the season, and 10-4 in WCC action. The Lions have won 10 of its last 11 matches and own an RPI of 26 entering the weekend. Sarah Sponcil leads the team with a tally of 365 kills on the year (3.58/s) followed closely behind by Jamie Lea (357 kills). Rachelle Suaava is the Lions' presence at the net with 1.17 blocks per set, and her 119 total blocks is 33rd in the NCAA.
The squad is second in the WCC in kills (14.21 k/s) and assists (13.41 a/s), and Hanna Tedrow leads the conference in assists with 1,169, or 11.69 per set. She stands at ninth in the nation in both total assists and assists per set.
Take Two with the Waves
The San Francisco volleyball team could not hold onto the early lead at Firestone Fieldhouse as the Dons fell to Pepperdine, 3-1.
Katarina Pilepic led the team with 15 kills, while
Oluoma Okaro added 12 kills on .435 hitting and a team-high five blocks.
Jurja Vlasic finished with 20 assists to pace the Dons, followed closely behind by
Kiara McKibben's 19 helpers.
Jessica Keenan, senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., scooped up a season-best 11 digs playing at the libero position.
Take Two with the Lions
The USF offense was stymied in LA as the squad fell in straight sets at Gersten Pavilion after hitting .143 on the night.
The Dons were led by seven kills for
Katarina Pilepic, while the pair of
Oluoma Okaro and
Courtney Sabahi each added five kills in the loss.
Kiara McKibben and
Jurja Vlasic finished with 11 assists apiece, and Vlasic and
Jessica Keenan recorded five digs for USF.
Last Time Out
The San Francisco volleyball team faced off with a laser-focused Santa Clara team, and the Broncos proved to be too hot to handle in the three-set sweep at the Leavey Center in USF's lone match of the week.Â
Katarina Pilepic recorded a team-high six kills, with
Courtney Sabahi and
Jessica Gaffney each finishing with four kills on the night for the Dons.
A Look Ahead
Following USF's weekend at home, the Dons hit the road for its final three matches of the 2015 season. Next week, USF travels to San Diego and BYU and the Dons cap the year at Bay Area rival Saint Mary's.
