USF's volleyball team will be back in action on Thursday night when the Dons play host to the Pepperdine Waves in War Memorial at the Sobrato Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Dons will close out the home weekend with a match against Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon with first serve slated for 1:00 p.m.
Â
The Dons (4-15, 0-6 WCC) will try to put the brakes on a 10-match losing streak against Pepperdine (7-11, 1-5 WCC) on Friday night. USF's last win came on Sept. 10 against Brown, a thrilling five-set victory in the San Francisco Challenge. The last seven setbacks have all been decided in straight sets.
Â
One of the top freshman in the WCC,
Tyna Adamcikova remains a bright spot for the Dons heading into their 20th match of the season Thursday night. The native of Opava in the Czech Republic ranks fifth in the WCC in kills per set (3.49) and also leads the conference in aces per set (0.40). She accounts for 4.22 points per set, fourth-best in the conference.
Â
Like USF, Pepperdine is a young team which is getting solid contributions from underclassmen. Sophomore Heidi Dyer's five triple-doubles this season rank first in the WCC and third in the nation. A solid all-around player, Dyer is averaging 2.12 kills, 5.2 assists and 2.2 digs per set. At 6-5, Tarah Wylie gives the Waves a strong presence in the middle. Freshmen Jasmine Gross, Hana Lishman and Hannah Frohling are seeing significant court time. Gross leads the WCC in blocks per game at 1.24.
Â
Pepperdine holds a 55-7 edge in the all-time series with USF and have won the last three in a row in the series – all four setters. However, six of USF's seven wins in the series have come since the 2008 season.
Â
Loyola Marymount, which reached the Sweet 16 of last year's NCAA Championship after a memorable second-round upset of Stanford, will bring a 12-6 overall record and a 3-3 WCC mark into Thursday night's match at Santa Clara. All three of their conference losses have come in five sets, including last Saturday, when the Lions were tripped up by Gonzaga at home. Setter Hannah Tedrow leads the WCC in assists per game at 11.73 while Sarah Sponcil is averaging 3.69 kills a set, fourth best in the conference. The Lions, picked fourth in the WCC Preseason Coaches' Poll, made a brief appearance in the AVCA Top 25 on Sept. 5.
Â
LMU swept the season series with USF last year, winning both matches in straight sets. However, the two teams have split the last 20 head-to-head meetings dating back to the 2006 season.
