THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco Dons baseball team suffered its first conference loss of the season, losing to the University of San Diego Toreros 5-0.
The Dons threatened early loading the bases in the bottom half of the first inning. Riley Helland started things off by hitting a single to left field, then a balk put him on third. Ross Puskarich worked a walk and RJ Cordeiro followed with a hit-by-pitch.
Landen Bourassa got the nod for the Dons and kept the Torero bats silent for four innings. In the top of the fifth inning USD opened up the games scoring, tallying two runs on a two out double from Shane McGuire. Scott Parker took over in the sixth with two outs and would allow the second of two runs to score in the inning before getting the final out. USD led after six, 4-0.
The Toreros would add another run in the eighth inning to make it 5-0. The lead-off batter for USD doubled down the right field line, and advanced to third a batter later through a single by Connor Doyle. The next batter for USD would bring home the runner on third with a groundout to third base.
In the final three innings, the Dons would get the lead-off runner on board but were unable to get the runner further than second base. USF's best chance came in the bottom of the eighth when they got runners on first and second, but the Toreros' Anthony Donatella got an inning ending double play to keep the score at 5-0.
With this loss, the Dons are now 18-9 on the season and 8-1 in West Coast Conference play. USF will be back to Benedetti Diamond on Monday to take on the Oregon Ducks in a one-game set. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
