Facing the Waves: In the long history of this series, the Waves hold a 118-50 advantage over the Dons. Last year, however, USF bested Pepperdine in their three-game matchup, taking two of three from the Waves. In game one, Ponticelli earned his third win of the year in a 3-0 win, while
Brendan Jenkins came in to get the save. In the final game of the series,
Scott Parker would earn his fifth win of the season in a break out offensive game for the Dons, taking the game 18-4.
What's at Stake: The Dons currently sit in second in the WCC standings behind Pepperdine. With the Waves taking a weekend off and the Dons losing two-of-three to Santa Clara, Pepperdine jumped ahead of USF in the standings. To put the pressure on Pepperdine, the Dons will look to come home with a series win in this pivotal conference series.
Weekend Trio: The Dons will send their usual weekend trio of
Thomas Ponticelli,
Riley Ornido and
Landen Bourassa. For Ponticelli and Ornido, they will be both be looking to get into the win column following no-decisions against Santa Clara. For Bourassa, the junior earned a win in the Dons final game against Santa Clara. Bourassa allowed six hits over six innings of work with four runs crossing the plate.
With a Wink: Freshman
Jack Winkler has impressed in the Dons last two games. In their final game against Santa Clara on Sunday, Winkler went three-for-five, driving in three RBIs. In their loss against Stanford, Winkler contributed two of USF's six hits on the night. His production at the bottom of the order will be vital in getting the Dons a series win over Pepperdine.
Two-out runs: After some early struggles in their series against Santa Clara with two-outs, the Dons offense exploded for 12 runs and eight of those coming with two-outs. The highest scoring inning would come in the second where three consecutive two-out doubles from
Riley Helland,
Michael Perri and
Ross Puskarich would bring home four runs. The inning would be capped off with a two-run home run from
Brady Bate.
