SAN FRANCISCO — A total of six University of San Francisco baseball players were honored Tuesday with 2019 all-West Coast Conference accolades, including senior outfielder
Jonathan Allen being named to the First Team.
Â
Along with Allen's first team nod, redshirt junior catcher
Robert Emery and junior outfielder
Tyler Villaroman were named to the all-WCC Second Team, and senior left-handed pitcher
Scott Parker, sophomore right-handed pitcher
Alex Pham and sophomore infielder
Jack Winkler each earned all-WCC Honorable Mention accolades.
Allen's selection to the 2019 all-WCC First Team gives the Dons at least one first team player in each of the last three years, and at least one in 14 of the last 15 seasons (since 2005).
Â
Regular season WCC champion BYU won two major individual honors, led by WCC Player of the Year Brock Hale (Sr., OF) while Mike Littlewood was selected by his peers as WCC Coach of the Year for the first time. LMU earned two major awards: WCC Pitcher of the Year Codie Paiva (Sr., RHP) and WCC Defensive Player of the Year Nick Sogard (Jr., IF). Tyler Thornton (RHP) of Saint Mary's collected WCC Freshman of the Year accolades. All five individual awards – along with the all-WCC First, Second and Freshmen Teams – were voted on solely by the conference's 10 head coaches.
Â
Allen, who received the Dons' Dante Benedetti Award (team MVP) on Monday, had a historic offensive season in his final year with the Dons. He hit 17 home runs – fourth-most in a single season at USF – and had 59 RBIs – the seventh-most in a single season. He hit 11 home runs, slugged .615 and had 31 RBIs in WCC games alone. Allen had two multi-home run games during the year (at Santa Clara, March 29; at Pacific, April 20) and slugged .562 overall with an on-base percentage of .370 for an OPS (On-base Plus Slugging) of .932. Allen also had 10 doubles, three triples, stole three bases and posted a .992 fielding percentage while starting every game of the season in the outfield.
Â
Emery was named to the Buster Posey Award watch list this season while batting a team-best .333 in conference play with 23 RBIs, six doubles and two home runs. He was flawless behind the plate during conference games with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 128 chances. Emery finished the year batting a team-best .320 overall with a team-high 17 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI performances. He had four separate hitting streaks of at least eight games.
Â
Villaroman batted .300 in conference games while stealing nine bases and playing a perfect center field (1.000 fielding percentage in 62 chances). He was the Dons' everyday leadoff hitter while stealing a team-high 21 bases throughout the year, second in the WCC, at a 91.3% success rate (21 for 23). He never committed an error this season in 120 outfield chances while batting .285 with three doubles, two triples, a home run, 18 RBIs and 35 runs scored.
Â
Pham, who earned the Dons' Top Pitcher award on Monday, had a breakout sophomore year, leading the Dons with 90 strikeouts against just 28 walks (a better-than 3-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio), a team-best 3.30 ERA and a team-low .226 opponent batting average. He recorded at least one strikeout in every single one of his 21 appearances – 11 in conference play – including at least five in 10 of them. He did not allow a run in 12 of his outings while also recording six saves (four in WCC play) – seventh-most in a single season at USF.
Â
Winkler earned the Dons' Best Defender award on Monday after starting every game this season at shortstop. His batting average never dropped below .300 this year. He started 2019 with a 12-game hitting streak and hit safely in 25 of the first 27 games. Winkler hit six home runs, 17 doubles scored a team-high 49 runs, collected 20 RBIs and stole nine bases. On defense, he led the team with 157 assists and helped turn 28 of USF's 44 double plays.
Â
Parker concluded his tenure on The Hilltop Sunday with his team-leading eighth win. He was USF's most consistent winner this year after being moved into the starting rotation. Parker won five consecutive starts from March 23rd to April 19th and went 8-3 with a 3.99 ERA. He had a career-best 10 strikeouts on the road against first-place BYU on May 10. He posted a near-3-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio with 59 Ks against just 21 walks.
