Dons Hard Work in the Classroom Recognized by the WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the sixth consecutive year, the University of San Francisco athletics department achieved high-levels of success in the classroom. The Dons had 130 students named to the annual West Coast Conference Commissioner's Honor roll, the fifth time in the last six years in which USF has had 130 or more students on the list.

"We celebrate all of our student-athletes' accomplishments both in competition and in the classroom," said Director of Athletics Joan McDermott. "Having over half of our student-athletes achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher is a testament to their hard work and dedication. I'm extremely pleased to report that every team earned a GPA of at least 3.0 this spring with our department recording a GPA of 3.34. For the 2018-19 year, our department had a GPA over 3.3. That level of success is an example not only of the student-athletes' hard work, but the tireless efforts of our coaches and administrators in helping our student-athletes reach their goal of excelling in the classroom."

More than 1,480 student-athletes qualified for recognition, establishing a conference record for the sixth-consecutive season. The 2013-14 season was the first year more than 1,200 student-athletes met the selection criteria. The conference recognizes those on the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll in three separate categories. Those who achieved 4.00 to 3.75 GPAs received Gold Honors. After that, 3.74 to 3.50 earned Silver Honors, and 3.49 to 3.00 were given Bronze Honors.

Each team on the Hilltop had student-athletes honored for their outstanding academic achievement, and 37 Dons represented their school in the Gold honors category. Five Dons earned a 4.0 cumulative GPA – Sandro Bradara, Bethan Parry, Cameron Martin, Nitzan Ricklis and Josien Scheepens. The Dons also had 34 athletes make Silver honors, while the rest achieved Bronze status.

To be considered, WCC student-athletes must have earned a varsity letter in a sport which the conference determined a champion in the recently completed academic year, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 must be based on a 4.0 scale and must have successfully completed an average of at least 12 graded credit hours (non pass-fail hours) per term.
