MSOC | Werf Leads Dons Past Rebels

SAN FRANCISCO — Graduate senior Jonah Van Der Werf scored his first goal of the 2019 season as well as the deciding goal of the match to give San Francisco their 1-0 victory over University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Sunday's victory, San Francisco improves to 2-3-0 with strong efforts from both sides of the field. As a team the Dons outshot the Rebels 17-10 with five shots on goal. 
  • Werf, who played 61 minutes in this afternoon's match, retrieved a shot taken from Zyan Andrade that hit the top of the goal post. Seconds later, it became a one-on-one match-up with Werf and his defender, as he was able to slip the ball right past UNLV for the brilliant finish at the lower right corner of the goal. Werf led the team with three shots and two on goal.
  • Both teams played aggressively to from start to finish. The Rebels and the Dons totaled five yellow cards and 35 fouls. UNLV saw two yellow cards and one red card as the Dons recorded one yellow card in the first half. In the second half, both teams had a yellow card apiece. 

NOTABLE NUMBERS

1: Both teams were scoreless up until the 55th minute after Werf's goal to lead the Dons 1-0.
2: San Francisco is now on a two-game winning streak, defeating San Jose State (3-0) and UNLV (1-0).
7: Ruben Stuiver, Cameron Martin, Ashish Chattha, Nathan Simeon, Taiki Kajitani and Easton Harryman played the full 90 minutes.
