SAN BRUNO — The 2020 college baseball season is only a week and a half away, and the University of San Francisco has started collecting its recognitions early. Three Dons were named to the 2020 all-West Coast Conference Preseason Team Wednesday, and the Dons were predicted to finish sixth in the preseason coaches' poll.
 
Senior right-handed pitcher Riley Ornido, senior outfielder Tyler Villaroman and junior infielder Jack Winkler were all selected for this year's all-WCC Preseason Team.
 
This is Ornido's second consecutive all-WCC Preseason Team recognition after also landing on the team last spring. He was an all-WCC first team pick in 2018. The 6-foot, 4-inch right-hander started 2019 with a 5-3 record and 0.95 ERA, throwing parts of four shutouts and striking out at least seven on five occasions.
 
Villaroman has positioned himself entering his senior season to finish his career as one of the greatest base stealers in USF program history. The dynamic leadoff hitter and everyday starting centerfielder for the Dons stole 21 bases on 23 attempts last season – a program top-10 all-time success rate in a single year. He has 50 stolen bases in his career, already ninth all-time on the USF career list. Named all-WCC Honorable Mention in 2019, Villaroman never committed an error in 120 outfield chances while batting .285 with three doubles, two triples, a home run, 18 RBIs and 35 runs scored.
 
Winkler, who was named all-WCC Honorable Mention last season, started every game at shortstop as a sophomore. His batting average never dropped below .300 during the campaign. He started 2019 with a 12-game hitting streak and hit safely in 25 of the first 27 games. Winkler hit six home runs, 17 doubles, scored a team-high 49 runs, collected 20 RBIs and stole nine bases. On defense, he led the team with 157 assists and helped turn 28 of USF's 44 double plays.
 
Only Gonzaga, the preseason conference favorite in the coaches' poll with 71 vote points and two first-place votes, matched the Dons' three all-WCC Preseason Team members. BYU, picked second with 68 points and a conference-high five first-place votes, had two. Loyola Marymount (picked third, 65 points with three first-place votes) also had two, as did San Diego (t-4th, 52 points), who tied with Pepperdine for the fourth spot in the poll.
 
The Dons landed sixth in the preseason poll with 46 points, getting picked ahead of Saint Mary's (7th, 40), Portland (8th, 20), Santa Clara (9th, 19), and Pacific (10th, 17). Last season, the Dons were picked to place fifth in the preseason and finished tied for fourth with a 15-12 WCC record and a 30-26 overall mark.
