BASE | 15 Dons Earn WCC All-Academic Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Fifteen University of San Francisco baseball players received West Coast Conference All-Academic honors, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.  Robert Emery and Tyler Villaroman earned First Team honors, with an additional 13 players receiving Honorable Mention accolades.
 
Along with Emery and Villaroman, Landen Bourassa, Ryan Cowdrey, Brandon Greim, Bo Jelinek, Kyle Knell, Thomas McCarthy, Josh Mollerus, Grant Nechak, Riley Ornido, Alex Pham, Riki Urata, Jack Winkler, and Grant Young all earned Honorable Mention honors. USF had the second-most honorees behind Pacific's 17. 
 
The Dons, who finished the spring with a team GPA of 3.55, had three student-athletes with 4.0 GPAs and an additional 20 players who had a 3.5 or higher. To be considered for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
 
Emery, a graduate student with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, boasts a 3.67 GPA and earns his second WCC All-Academic honor – he was named to the Honorable Mention team in 2019.  This season, the Dons backstop started all 17 games.  He was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List for the second time in his career on March 9.  He hit .449 (22 for 49) with four doubles, two home runs,  and nine RBI.
 
Villaroman, a Business Administration major with a 3.68 cumulative GPA, also earns his second all-academic honor from the conference. The Dons centerfielder and leadoff hitter was named to the Preseason All-West Coast Conference team, finishing the shortened year with hits in 15 of 17 games and eight multi-hit performances.  The season ended as Villaroman was riding a nine-game hitting streak, during which he batted .375.  With three stolen bases against Sacramento State on March 10, he took sole possession of second all-time in the USF career records list.    
 
Bourassa, a graduate student in the USF Sports Management program, has a 3.80 GPA and made four starts in his return to the mound after missing last season. Cowdry earns honorable mention honors in his first year eligible. The Management major with a 3.42 GPA finished the year without allowing a run in four appearances this season. ­Greim, a Marketing major with a 3.48 GPA, appeared in 14 games with seven starts at second base, and did not commit an error in his final 12 games (19 chances).
 
Jelinek, a Business Administration major with a 3.32 GPA, appeared in five games on the mound, which included his first-career start. Knell, an Accounting major, boasts a 3.34 GPA and appeared in 15 games with eight starts.  He had his first-career home run in the Dons' win over California. McCarthy finished the spring with a perfect 4.0 GPA.  The Politics major with a cumulative 3.82 GPA earns his second all-academic honor. 
 
Mollerus, a Management major with a 3.64 GPA, threw three games out of the pen for the Dons this season.  He did not allow a run in either of his last two appearances. Nechak, also a Management major, boasts a 3.47 GPA. He made four appearances and finished the year with 2.89 ERA.
 
Ornido makes his second appearance on the all-academic team after earning First Team honors in 2019.  The Economics major with a 3.54 GPA was a Preseason All-WCC honoree, and made four starts in five total appearances for the Dons in 2020.  Pham, a Finance major with a 3.47 GPA, made seven relief appearances this season, allowing zero or only one run in six of his seven games.
 
Urata, an International Business major with a 3.59 GPA, makes his second appearance on the all-academic team.  He played in all 17 games, making 16 starts at the hot corner for the Dons in 2020.  Winkler, a Biology major with a 3.70 GPA, earns his second all-academic honor.  In 2020, he started all 20 games at short. Young, a 2019 All-Academic Honorable Mention Honoree, is a Marketing major with a 3.79 GPA. This season he made seven appearances, including two starts, for the Dons.
