SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference announced this morning that USF forward
Claudia Langarita was selected as the WCC's Freshman of the Week following her stellar play this week in the Dons' wins over Portland and Pepperdine. This is the third time this season Claudia has won Freshman of the Week, and it's the second time in three weeks she's been bestowed this honor.Â
Langarita and teammate
Ioanna Krimili helped the Dons sweep the awards this week as
Krimili was named WCC Player of the Week. USF becomes the first team to sweep the weekly awards during the 2021-22 season, and dating back to last season USF leads the WCC with four weeks of winning both player and freshman of the week.
Pressed into a starting role in the Dons Thursday night matchup with Portland, Claudia played a career-high 37 minutes and scored 15 points while grabbing four rebounds to go along with a an assist, block and a steal in the USF victory. Battling hard with the tall Portland team, Langarita found a way to be productive including knocking down a wide-open three late in the fourth quarter to put the game to bed.
Returning to customary bench role against the Waves, Langarita was a highly efficient 8-for-12 from the field as she scored 16 points and secured five rebounds in the road victory over Pepperdine. The win helped catapult to Dons to third place in the WCC standings all by themselves heading into the final week of the regular season.Â
