Dons Come Up Short to Open Series With ASU

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Playing in just their third road game of the 2022 season, the USF Dons baseball team (10-5) came up short on the road tonight as they fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-9) 8-5 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Dons got off to a quick start with three doubles leading to a quick 2-0 lead, and despite being down to their final out late battled all the way to the end and had the tying run in the on-deck circle before the Sun Devils recorded Friday's final out.

USF now will prepare for a split double header on Saturday as they will take on the Missouri Tigers and the Sun Devils for the second game of the series. First pitch for game one will be at 12:00 p.m. and game two will begin around 5:00 p.m. PST with live streaming and live statistics available via the team's schedule page.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- USF started the night off right as they scored twice in the second inning as Michael Campagna drove an opposite field double to right center that scored Kyle Knell, while Mario DeMera brought in Campagna later in the inning to give USF the early 2-0 lead.
- Arizona State scored in the bottom half of the inning as the pace was frantic throughout the early stages of the game.
- The Sun Devils scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead, and the Dons answered back immediately in the top of the sixth as Luke Keaschall scored on a wild pitch to even the game at three apiece.
- ASU broke out in the sixth and seventh innings by scoring once in the sixth and four in the seventh on a grand slam as they built an 8-3 lead.
- The Dons fought until the final out on Friday as Jordan Vujovich drove in Tyler Martinez and Darius Foster with an opposite field RBI double to make it 8-5 which ended up being the final score.
- Campagna had a nice day at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and scored a run for USF.
- DeMera kept to his hot hitting ways with another two hit day going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
- Knell, Foster and Keaschall each doubled and scored a run for the Dons against the Sun Devils.
- Owen Stevenson made his fourth start of the season as he worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs while walking and striking out one Sun Devil apiece.
