Dons Face No. 21 Oregon in Two Game Series

EUGENE, Ore. -- Following a productive weekend when they took two of three from the Portland Pilots, the USF Dons baseball team (14-12, 3-3) is back in action as they will venture south for two games this week against the No. 21 Oregon Ducks (16-7, 7-2) at PK Park.

Both programs are feeling good after series wins as the Ducks took two of three at home over the USC Trojans as they climbed the collegiate baseball rankings. The Dons picked up their first two road conference wins and their first series win in WCC play after wins on Friday and Saturday over the Pilots.

ROAD SERIES W:
  • USF showed a lot of grit and determination in taking two of three from a good Portland team as their pitching shined in both victories, which included a 14 inning marathon that the Dons were able to come away victorious from.
  • Dons' starting pitcher Owen Stevenson has been absolutely dominant through the early portion of the season as he's ranked fifth in the WCC in earned run average with an impressive 2.48 mark so far after tossing 6 2/3 innings of one run ball against the Pilots last time out.
  • Infielder Mario DeMera also shined over the weekend in the Pacific Northwest as he rose his batting average to .276 and is now second in both doubles and hits for the Dons through the early part of the season.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday's games will be just the 12th and 13th ever matchups between the two programs with the Ducks holding the 7-4 overall advantage. The two teams last met up during the 2018 season for one game at each other's ballparks with the road team winning each game.
SCOUTING THE DUCKS:
  • Oregon's had a strong start to their 2022 season with a 16-7 overall record and an impressive 7-2 mark within conference play. They've faced a few similar opponents as the Dons with previous series against St. John's, UC Santa Barbara and Portland through the early part of the season.
  • At the plate, the Ducks are led by sophomore outfielder Colby Shade who's been an absolute monster against opposing pitching this season with a .436 batting average as he's getting on base more than half the time and hitting for power. Far from the only potent bat in the Oregon batting order he currently leads the Ducks with 23 RBI this season.
  • Out of the Oregon bullpen, senior left-hander Kolby Somers has been a nightmare for opposing hitters with a 0.90 ERA as he's collected four saves and struck out 15 hitters in 10 innings pitched this season.
  • USF's pitching staff will have their hands full in trying to limit the Oregon offense that consists of eight everyday players posting .300 batting averages or higher so far in the 2022 season.
