USF Drops Extra Inning Contest to Ducks

EUGENE, Calif. -- In a hard fought close game throughout, the USF Dons baseball team battled into extra innings before ultimately coming up short against the Oregon Ducks Tuesday afternoon in a 4-3 final in 11 innings.

USF got off to a quick start on Tuesday as Nick Yovetich drove a deep two-run home run over the wall in right field to put the Dons up early, while freshman outfielder Zach Freeman continued to produce with an RBI single back up the middle in the sixth inning to account for USF's three runs on Tuesday.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Yovetich got the Dons off to a quick start with a deep home run over the wall in right field that scored Kyle Knell and put USF up 2-0 in the second inning at PK Park.
  • Oregon responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to even the score at two through the first third of the game.
  • The Dons received a huge clutch hit from Freeman in the the top of the sixth as he brought home Jordan Vujovich from second that gave USF a 3-2 lead.
  • Both offenses went quiet until the bottom of the ninth as the Ducks scratched across the tying run in the ninth to force extra innings in Eugene.
  • Oregon brought home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on an infield single as they went home with the 4-3 win in the 11th.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Yovetich provided great thump at the bottom of the Dons order as he went 1-for-4 with the two-run homer, a walk and a run scored while making a few nice defensive plays in center field.
  • Hitting in the three-hole on Wednesday, Vujovich reached base three times going 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored as he displayed his impressive plate discipline once again.
  • Freeman went 1-for-4 at the plate including his clutch RBI single up the middle that gave USF the lead during the middle innings.
  • On the mound, Lance Santerre and Jonah Jenkins combined to throw four scoreless innings as they found ways to tame the potent Ducks' lineup as the two combined to not allow a hit or walk and struck out two Oregon hitters.
UP NEXT:
The Dons now will return home for a seven game home stand starting with three games against the San Diego Toreros (16-7, 5-1) this weekend beginning on Friday. First pitch for Friday's game will be at 1:00 p.m. with live streaming and live statistics available via the team's schedule page
