Dons Play Complete Game for Third Straight Win

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Playing their third game in a four game set, the USF Dons baseball team (8-4) left little doubt throughout Saturday's afternoon 13-2 win by dismantling the St. John's Red Storm (1-10) for USF's third straight win as they seek the sweep tomorrow afternoon.

Harris Williams III got the Dons started on the right foot by blasting a deep grand slam over the wall in right field to put USF up 5-1 in the bottom of the first and they kept on hitting throughout. Left-hander Weston Lombard was solid pitching five innings of one run ball to pick up his second win of the season as he retired 10 of the last 11 Red Storm batters he faced.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Red Storm got off to a quick start by scoring a run in the top of the first, but the Dons were packed with quite an answer. Williams III answered back in a big way launching a grand slam over the wall in right after USF worked patient at-bats that led to runners in scoring position.
  • USF padded their lead in the third courtesy of an RBI double to dead center from Gabe Giosso to score Williams III to make it 6-1 USF.
  • The Dons put another crooked number on the board in the bottom of the fifth plating four runs thanks in part to patient at-bats and struggles from St John's to throw strikes consistently. Giosso drove in a run with an RBI single, Brandon Greim had a Sacrifice Fly, Darius Foster brought in a run with a bases loaded walk and Luke Keaschall brought in another after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 10-1 after five innings of play.
  • Mario DeMera got in on the home run party by lining a two-run home run over the wall in left to make it 12-1, and Lane Oliphant drove an RBI double down the left field line to score Christian Stapleton for the 12-1 lead.
  • St John's tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth before Riley Ornido shut the door for the 13-2 win and the eighth win overall for USF in 2022.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Williams III broke the game open early with his grand slam in what ended up being a 1-for-3 night at the plate with three runs scored, two walks drawn and four RBI against the Red Storm.
  • Lombard battled through five innings without his best stuff, but limited the Red Storm to just one run over five innings as he allowed two hits and struck out one hitter to pick up his second win of the season.
  • DeMera continued his stellar two days at the plate as he went 2-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored as he provided thump in the cleanup spot in the batting order.
  • Giosso continued his nice run at the plate with another 2-for-3 day and a pair of RBI as he's done nothing but hit since arriving on the Hilltop.
  • Kaleb Woltz and Will Hearn combined to throw two scoreless innings in relief while Ornido shut the door with two great innings on his own to secure the USF win.
