Dons Fall Short Against #22 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. -- Heading out on the road for a weeknight non-conference battle, the USF Dons baseball team (17-19, 6-6) battled hard until the final out as they fell short to the #22 Stanford Cardinal (18-10, 9-6) 6-5 at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday evening.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Both offenses were ready to go from the opening pitch, as the Dons were able to score a couple of runs in the top of the first as Gabe Giosso drove a double down the left field line to drive home Luke Keaschall, and then came around to score on a wild pitch to give USF the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Cardinal responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead after the first inning.
  • Stanford went on to add two more runs in the bottom of the second as they were able to build a 5-2 lead through the first two innings before the USF pitching staff settled into the rest of the game.
  • The Dons' offense was able to get back into the swing of things adding a run in the top of the fourth as Keaschall worked a walk with the bases loaded that scored Darius Foster to make it a 5-3 lead.
  • USF was able to scratch across another run in the fifth as they took advantage of a Cardinal defensive miscue as Jordan Vujovich drove a ball to left field that was misplayed to allow Giosso to come around to score and cut the Stanford lead to 5-4 through five innings.
  • Evening the score in the sixth, Harris Williams III drove a triple to right center that scored Keaschall to make it a 5-all game through six innings of play.
  • Both offenses went quiet in the late innings before the Cardinal were able to scratch across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as they went on to secure a 6-5 victory on their home field.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Keaschall was able to reach base five times hitting at the top of the USF batting order as he worked a walk, collected a hit and was hit by three pitches while also scoring two runs for the Dons.
  • Giosso had a big impact at the plate going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI as the top three hitters in the USF batting order provided a big impact for the Dons' offense.
  • Williams III picked a great time to record his first triple of the season as he hit the gap in right center field to score the tying run in the middle innings against Stanford.
  • Right-handed pitcher Sam Beck did a tremendous job in relief work as he tossed 2 2/3 innings to keep the Dons in the game when they were down early as he allowed just one walk and struck out two Cardinal hitters without allowing a hit.
UP NEXT:
USF will now head out on the road for a three game road trip to take on the Pepperdine Waves in Malibu for a three game series starting on Thursday afternoon. Live streaming and live statistics are available through the team's schedule page
