Spartans Squeeze Past Dons in Extras

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Squaring off against the Spartans for the second time this season, the University of San Francisco baseball team (16-16, 5-4 WCC) battled until their final at-bat, but ultimately fell to San Jose State (15-16, 6-6 MW), 4-2, in extra innings at Benedetti Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Beginning the ballgame with a jolt, the Spartans got on the board on a solo home run from Robert Hamchuk in the top of the first.
  • With neither side unable to get much going offensively through the next three innings, the Dons evened the contest on an RBI double down the rightfield line from Brandon Greim in the bottom of the fifth, which plated Zach Freeman to knot the game at one.
  • Two batters later, Lane Oliphant came up clutch by dropping a single in front of the left fielder to drive home Greim and give USF their first lead of the afternoon.
  • In the top of the sixth, SJSU answered back with one run to tie the Dons at two as Jack Colette came across on an error from USF.
  • Moving into the bottom of the eighth, Darius Foster was able to advance to third base for the Dons, but USF could not find the timely hitting they needed to drive home the senior.
  • Following a scoreless ninth inning from both teams, James Shimashita launched a two-run home run over the right field fence in the top of the tenth to catapult the Spartans in front, 4-2. Closing out the game in the home half of the inning, Joey Cammarata came on for SJSU out of the bullpen to secure his first save of the season and the 4-2 victory for the Spartans.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Toeing the rubber for the first time as a starter, Kaleb Woltz pitched 3.0 innings for USF on Tuesday, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out two and issuing only one walk.
  • Continuing their dominance in the middle innings, Weston Lombard, Kai Burdick and Julian Washburn combined for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief as the three relievers punched out six total batters while allowing only one base-on-balls.
  • Heating up at the dish, Greim's double in the fifth extended his hitting streak to three consecutive games.
POSTGAME: UP NEXT:
USF will remain at home as they welcome the conference's top team- No. 17 Gonzaga- to the Hilltop this weekend. All three games will begin at 1:00 pm local time as live streaming and live statistics are available via the team's schedule page.
