Bulldogs Take Game One Over Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Opening the weekend against one of the top programs in the country, the University of San Francisco baseball team (16-17, 5-5 WCC) kept close with No. 17 Gonzaga (20-7, 8-2 WCC) in their series opener, but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs, 11-3 on Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting on the board to begin the contest, Gonzaga tallied the opening run of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly from Grayson Sterling in the top of the first.
  • With neither team able to find momentum in the second inning, the Zags pushed their lead to 3-0 on a two-run single from Sterling in the top of the third.
  • Two innings later, GU extended their lead to 5-0 on two runs and four hits in their turn at the plate, but the Dons answered back with three runs on three hits in the home half of the fifth to trim their deficit to 5-3. Notably, first baseman Gabe Giosso delivered a two-out, two-run single into left center field to plate Luke Keaschall and Nick Yovetich.
  • Moving into the middle innings, neither side was able to find success at the dish as it was not until the ninth when Gonzaga added insurance to their lead. Pushing across six runs on five hits in the top of the ninth, the Zags went on to secure their eighth conference victory of the season by a final of 11-3.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Finding his stride offensively, Keaschall has now notched at least one hit in seven of his last ten games as the sophomore finished 1-for-2 with two walks and one run scored on Friday.
  • Driving in two runs for USF, Giosso recorded his seventh multi-RBI performance of the season after going 1-for-4 against GU. For Yovetich, the redshirt senior logged his fourth multi-hit performance after going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
  • On the mound, Oscar Lepe delivered 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Dons, which marked the sixth scoreless outing of the year for the left-hander.
POSTGAME: UP NEXT:
Game two of the weekend series between the Bulldogs and Dons is set for tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 9 at 1:00 pm. Right-hander Trystan Vrieling will get the call for Gonzaga to start the ballgame while Riley Ornido will toe the rubber for USF.
