Yovetich's Big Day Leads Dons Past Tigers

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- On a bright, warm afternoon in the City by the Bay, the USF Dons baseball team (26-28, 12-13) got out of the gates hot and held a lead throughout as they knocked off the Pacific Tigers (14-36, 5-20) 8-5 on Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

USF was able to get their offense rolling early with a five-run bottom of the first responding from the Tigers' three spot in the top of the inning. Senior outfielder Nick Yovetich had a nice day at the plate in his final series on the Hilltop, going 2-for-4 with four RBI helping the Dons take the series opener.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • UOP built an early lead in the top of the first as they scored three runs in the top of the first scoring all of their runs with two away in the inning.
  • The Dons wasted little time to respond as they were able to score five runs in the bottom of the first as Mario DeMera hit a two-run double, Michael Campagna walked with the bases loaded and Yovetich lined a two-run single to center to cap off the inning.
  • Following a scoreless second, USF was able to tack on two more runs to their lead courtesy of a Zach Freeman opposite field double to score DeMera and another two-run single from Yovetich that brought home Freeman and Brandon Greim.
  • Attempting to claw their way back, UOP added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth with a two-run single against USF releiver Adam Shew before he settled in and threw a scoreless seventh inning.
  • Both pitching staffs settled in for the remainder of the game with zeroes being traded all the way until the final out. Right-hander Owen Stevenson came in during the eighth inning and recorded the final six outs to help the Dons secure the 8-5 win on their home diamond.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Dons starting pitcher Jonah Jenkins was effective as he picked his second victory of the season after holding UOP to only three runs in five innings of work while also striking out five batters.
  • Outfielder Harris Williams III continued his impressive run at the plate with a 2-for-3 afternoon as he drove an opposite field double to left, worked a walk and scored a run while hitting in the two-hole.
  • DeMera took full of advantage of his time in the cleanup spot with a 2-for-4 day including a double as well as two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
  • Moved into the fifth spot in the batting order, Greim recorded a pair of hits as well going 2-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs.
  • Pitching in relief, Stevenson was able to slam the door with two scoreless innings as he retired the Tiger hitters in order for the first save of his collegiate career.
