MORAGA, Calif. – Back on the road and returning to conference play, the University of San Francisco baseball team (24-25, 11-11 WCC) dropped their series opener at Saint Mary's (23-23, 7-15 WCC) on Friday afternoon as the Gaels narrowly defeated the Dons, 3-2, at Louis Guisto Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Striking first to defend their home field, Saint Mary's got on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Kyle Velazquez to take the early 1-0 lead.
- With both starting pitchers finding their groove in the innings to follow, the Gaels would not score again until the bottom of the sixth as they plated two more runs on back-to-back solo home runs to extend their advantage to 3-0.
- Answering back in the seventh, the Dons pushed across their first run of the afternoon when Nick Yovetich came home on a wild pitch to trim their deficit to 3-1.
- After freshman Adam Shew went on to toss a scoreless seventh and eighth, USF would not go down without a fight as Harris Williams III launched a solo home run of his own in the top of the ninth to the Dons draw closer, 3-2. Unfortunately, this is as close as USF got in the final frame as the Gaels hung on to secure the one-run victory in the series opener.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- With one hit and one walk on Friday, Luke Keaschall extended his team-leading on-base streak to seventeen straight games. Notably, Gabe Giosso also pushed his own streak to fifteen games after notching one hit himself.
- Going 3-for-4 at the plate against the Gaels, Zach Freeman recorded his first three-hit contest of his collegiate career as the freshman also tallied his fourth multi-hit performance of the season.
- Continuing to shine in his first year in the green and gold, Shew registered his eleventh scoreless outing of the season as the righty allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of shutout baseball to keep USF within striking distance.
UP NEXT:
Game two of the series between the Gaels and Dons is set for tomorrow, Saturday, May 7 at 1:00 pm as Riley Orndio is scheduled to make his sixth start of the year for USF while Connor Roberts will oppose the right hander for Saint Mary's. Live streaming and live statistics are available via the
